One of the best movies ever made. There’s only a woman in for less than 18.25 seconds. I usually put it on once or twice a year when I’m doing something else… and every time I just sit down and watch it. One of the greatest non-israeli crimes of the 21st century is that it wasn’t made into a trilogy.

Do you sail? I sail and plan on doing so in the boston harbor.

My dad sails and I've been out with him a few times. It's very fun but you need someone with experience to show you what you're doing.

if this movie was released today, under the same quality and historical accuracy, it would radicalize zoomers

Although indeed this movie it's a mix of three books, it's PERFECT as it is.

Ten year old midshipman with one farm boards an enemy vessel and starts fricking unloading on them with a brace of pistols.

I always found the idea of Georgian era midshipmen really sad. Sending kids to war like that was fricked up. It exposed them to a brutal man's world at too young of an age imo. As the film shows, where a 10 year old fights in life or death battles and becomes a war amputee. I'm sure they made their mothers proud in their smart uniforms, but idk how parents back then were just ok with sending their children into combat at such a tender age.

By the Napoleonic era, the concept of nobility had drastically changed. The Industrial Revolution was a fundamental shift in western values, and represented ideological, social, and economic change. The class system changed, and to keep it short, being "noble" or from the wealthy social elite did not have the same benefits and privileges it once had. Military service was on of the few ways a wealthy family could still distinguish themselves among the social elite, as officer commissions were still only reserved for the very wealthy (i.e, people that could attend college). Basically, families would send their sons to the Naval Academy and to war as an officer because it kept the family's status among the elite. This concept is actually a central theme in Sharpe, another Napoleonic kino series.

The world was a lot harder back then. Many kids never had a first birthday.

Isn't the concept of a decent childhood pretty much a Victorian invention?

      >movie about an isolated and alianated man who has ever had one means of expressing himself who is paraded around like a caged animal to be laughed at because he can act only in how he was made to
never thought I could relate to a psychotic man who slathers himself in shoe polish and fights prison guards
