Are gyms a lek?

"In the field of evolutionary biology, a lek is an aggregation of male animals gathered to engage in competitive displays and courtship rituals, known as lekking, to entice visiting females which are surveying prospective partners with which to mate. A lekking species is characterised by male displays, strong female mate choice, and the conferring of indirect benefits to males and reduced costs to females" - Wikipedia

Do you think this concept applies to modern day gyms? Men are known to engage in more risky, showy behavior in the presence of women, in an attempt to draw attention of prospective mates. On the other hand, members of both sexes can often be observed 'mirin' each other's exercise feats or physiques.

So, do we have a lek in the form of gyms in human beings?

    >Do you think this concept applies to modern day gyms?

    No.

    >do we have a lek in the form of gyms in human beings?

    No.

Men try to impress other men and are scared of women. Women try to impress other women and are scared of men.

anyone who uses a gym as a place to "surveying prospective partners with which to mate' is a fricking loser

Climbing gyms on the other hand are way better for trying to start some kind of relationship/friendship with someone

why are you bothing to do that?
once you get a bit older it will hit you and BAM you will loose interest in climbing and hard physical activity.
use your energy to form relationships with people and making money. You are wasting you time with this excessive exercise. exercise just enough so you are fit and look good, but nothing more.

no, gym is not for socialising, gym is for lifting

      this
unless you have a home gym, you're forced to use a public gym, it has nothing to do with socializing. you can use it how you want it but not everyone falls under this narrow view of the world op where everything is according to some made up social laws

the presence of other people while you lift, makes it 10 times tougher
        it's a huge distraction

Unless someone is doing some moronic shit right next to me that can get myself or others hurt people are not a distraction.

I disagree. Unless the equipment I need is taken, the presence of other people makes me more willing to lift hard. Benching more than the guy next to me is squatting is a good motivator.

I think a basic home gym (rack, barbell, weights, bench and dumbells) will amortize after about a year. I'm sure you can even come up with a payment plan through a credit card company or something if you cant come up with all the money at once.
If you really want to use machines its another story of course.

Men will turn almost anything into a lek if there are enough guys and few hot women.
It's easily observable. Go to the beach, a pub/club, a university lecturer, any sporting event etc and watch how men change behaviour once a few good looking girls enter the scene.

The difference with gyms is the exercising has a utility function outside of sexual selection. Traditional lek formations described in evolutionary biology typically do not, and if anything, some come at a cost (direct or opportunity).

    >are gyms a lek
no. bodybuilding (lifting in general) has a rich history with gay culture. the dudes aren't competing for women, they're competing for men. so it's a gay equivalent to lek.

No. If it is, you're at the wrong gym.
Gyms are a place where men and some women go to be cooperative and better than they were yesterday.
If you go to gym to chase c**ts, you should leave and don't come back.

No. A gym is like a temple or neutral social ground. A lek would be more like a football field, house party, or night club

Yes I think this is 100% accurate
Wasnt aware there was a term for this

Also for the kids that are getting triggered in this thread, why do you think women go to the gym

      >why do you think women go to the gym
To train, because males who go to the gym are the type that women don't find attractive - that's why they go to the gym in the first place.

I believe gyms are a lek for the following reasons:

    1) there is intrasexual competition.
    - men doing rigorous exercises display their physical fitness. men lifting more or doing more impressive feats of athleticism garner greater attention from women at the expense of other men. think about how often someone lifting really heavy gets people observing them, compared to the guy doing lmao 1 plate bench. or how seeing an attractive female might cause you life heavier than you ordinarily would
    - women compete with other women in the form of the clothing they wear. they often wear bright,
or revealing clothing that makes them stand out in the gym and amongst other women (their competitors). many will often engage in meme exercises that is specifically designed to draw attention to specific parts of their body that men find attractive. which is at the expense of other women who do not engage in such behavior.
    2) both men and women pose in the gym, signaling their physical fitness and attractiveness to those around them.

Trying to assign base, armchair biological explanations to all human activity is such dimwit shit. Humans are more advanced so we do shit that's just fun. We like to dig a hole or something, it's not some gay ass IM TRAINING TO DIG FOR PREY TO HUNT it's just satisfying to dig a hole. Gym is the same way, it's adult playtime.

Also you will never get a girl at the gym nor do you want a girl at the gym, they're nuts. It's the same as girls that try to insert themselves into DnD or whatever (what's the biological explanation for tabletop roleplaying?) they're there for attention from men because whatever they're already getting isn't enough.

if that's the case, then why do you have to drag so many people to get their ass to the gym in the first place?

To me they sort of are, but not in the competitive aspect. I don't care what another guy is lifting, the guys there are my bros whether they feel that way mutually or not. However, if I'm lifting next to a cute girl then I'm definitely lifting heavy and pushing myself. Gym girls like watching guys lift heavy weights, and I just feel stronger when there's a gym girl there that I can just peek at through the mirror to give myself horny fuel
