    I don't like them
maybe I'm an idiot but my mom always washed rice and boiled it in a pot and I do the same exact thing
same with egg cookers, they're convenient but I don't like them, I prefer to boil them in water

My homie you put water into the rice cooker and then it makes perfect rice because it knows when to turn itself off based on the steam and heat so that you literally get perfect rice every single time. Do you think the rice cooker works by not boiling the rice in water? How are you this stupid you and your mother are moronic.

Do any of you anons use one? Would you recommend it?

Yes. Something beyond a $10 one will have a timer, you just set the time you want it finished and it'll start to finish on time. You don't need to pay attention to anything or stir it and it'll automatically go into warm mode if you're not there when it finishes.

It makes better rice than you'll ever make on a stove.

Steel cut oats options are great because then you can set it the night before and wake up to oats.

I use one and I like it. It's more convenient than the stove top to me. Steams vegetables at the same time, too, which is great.

yeah that's a big part of the appeal for me, great way to prepare two parts of your meal at once. Plus rice cookers are pretty cheap. I got mine for like $20 and use it pretty often, so definitely worth it for me.

The decrease in gas usage and not needing to shut it off everytime it's overflowing is enough reason to buy them. They're also cheap.

        Anonymous

They take too long and usually overcook the rice. Your average pot of rice will never overflow if you keep the lid off which you should be doing anyway and wash the starch off your rice beforehand.

Yes, just be sure to buy calrose/medium grain rice, and cook with 1.5 cups of water per 1 cup of dry rice, works perfectly even in a cheap one.

just get one of those big cast iron casseroles
sure it will take longer to cook some things in it
but the cooking will just be insanely better
especially if you like making one-pot recipes
    like for example :

    >dump pasta/rice/potatoes/veggies (frozen)
    >dump meat cubes/casserole beef/pulled chicken from store rotisserie chicken
    >add water/beef broth/chicken stock
    >add butter, lard, olive oil, ghee, beef fat/tallow
    >spices? check. herbs? check.
    >close the lid, put on medium heat (simmer, bubbling slightly, not raging) or place in oven if you prefer it to stove at roughly 190-210.
    >cook for like 1 hour, check ever 30 mins.
    >last 15 open lid and let dehumidify/dehydrate to add some crunch/crispiness if you want to (in oven), maybe add some cheese and make a gratin.

You can also do ''one-pot recipes'' with a rice cooker but it's basically only going to be stew and steamed food, it'll be harder for you to get a crisp or some gratin.

If you're lazy and just want easy meal prep recommendations, get yourself one of these ''instant pots'' or a cast iron if you want analog and just try out all the ''one pot recipes'' you can find. Insanely easy cooking.

Absolutely MOGGED by Zojirushi’s tea water warmer in terms of usefulness, but ultimately still really useful if you eat a lot of rice. A really nice to have convenience of the modern age. Then, again, if you’re not eating a lot of rice, what’s the point? And it’s not like it washes your rice for you or anything, you still have to do that.

I had one but I didnt like it
but I'm turkish and we make rice a little bit differently

    >boil some water, drop a bullion into it, let it simmer on the side
    >melt some butter, add rice, allow it to soak in said butter and fry it for 30-60 seconds, depending on how dry or moist you like your rice, "experts" cook it for 30-40 seconds
    >add simmered mixture, drop heat to low, close the lid, cook until no more water
the water should be 2-3 cms above rice the moment you pour it in
this is also the step where you can add meat, chickpeas (amazing addition), tomatoes etc
    >when you cant see water, kill the fire, place a towel between the pan and the lid and let it simmer for 10-30 minutes
    >eat, preferably with some meat next to it

with quality döner, it would look like this

Instapot seems much better for potatoes than rice. I have a rice cooker but it's honestly worse than just using a pot because the starch from the rice makes it foam like crazy in the rice cooker and it spills over unless I use less water than needed and then keep adding more water until the rice is cooked. Then on top of that the feature to keep the rice warm actually heats it way too much so it almost burns and gets hard and half of it sticks to the rice cooker. When I cook it in the pot I can just use any amount of water and just by the size of the rice corns and how they tumble in the cooking water I can tell when it's perfect even when I don't time it.

Rice cookers are not a meme.
Either get a cheap small one for ~20 bucks or get one that can cook more than just rice, like steam veggies and rice at the same time for a little bit more (pic related).
It's very cozy to just toss in some rice, veggies, meat and then pop the button down and come back 15 minutes later for a well steamed meal.
