Portland NW planet fitness gyms stink of B.O. and rampant with NORMIES and BOOMERS.

The one I went to is at the bottom right. The newest one just opened in gresham a few mins from me. I told off some stinky ass hobo off for stinking up the whole dumbbell area by the windows. Seems like he had a personal trainer that looked like his mom yet the guy looks Hella alot older. Drugs probably. Sad.
Fricked up cause they were looking at ME like I'M the ONE in the wrong for saying something. No judgemental zone sure but if you fricking stink, get out.
You could literally be an IFBB pro with the machines at planet fitness. Whoever convinced you that you need to backseat and deadlift to built a physique lied to you.
pros >great for 95% of lifters >cheap >24/7 >aesthetic
cons >busy >no more free 'za >lacking niche gym equipment and heavy dumbbells (up to 60 or 80lbs iirc) >lunk alarm isn't used
Depends on how seriously the employees want to enforce some of the gaygier policies, what times you go, and how ghetto the clientele in your area are.
If you're beginner to intermediate the equipment is fine from what I've seen.
the only real complaint I have is that the low cost poses a low barrier to entry which translates into a gym that is often crowded, making it difficult to stay consistent with a routine without either waiting around or constantly having to adapt your exercises, but hey, that's what you get for $15/mo
the color scheme sucks and their marketing is very anti-fitness but I've used them while traveling lots of times because they've got a $10 day pass. At the end of the day they're not any different from any other gym, although I've never been there during one of the infamous pizza parties.
The only acceptable gym is the homegym. The only acceptable weights are hexbells. The only accessories you need are a flat bench, a pull up bar, and a pull up belt.
Only negative about pf I've found so far is that they don't have a way for me to train lower back anymore since I maxed out the back extension machine. But I guess I could do back extensions on one of those padded things while holding dumbbells, but I think I'd quickly milk all the gains from that too
Everything else is fine. If you get to the point of maxing all of the machines, you can start doing them unilaterally, giving you twice as much weight as the first go-around. If you can do all of the machines unilaterally with max weight stack then you are absurdly strong and look pretty fricking good
This is my problem too. Max back extension, close to maxing the leg press and hamstring curl. Kinda getting there on the pec deck too. Some of the machine stacks are just not heavy enough
Been considering getting a gym pin to add more plates to weight stack, but I don't know if staff would be cool with that. Also, it might overload the machine and snap a cable or something. I'd think that if a cable was snapped because of adding more weight on than the machine was engineered for that they might try to charge me for damages or revoke my membership. What you think man? Any ideas to get mire out of the back extension machine?
For the back extensions, I've been mulling over doing it by being turned to the side a little. A gym pin is a good idea, just that if you do break something, don't tell the staff until after you remove the extra plate.
My dad did that all the time when I lifted with him and nobody worried and nothing broke. I guess it is a different time now with chinkier fabrication though.
it's not that the gym itself is bad. yeah they don't have freeweights beyond dumbells but it's clean and has a lot of room. it's the typical clientele that sucks. packs of zoomer boys with their broccoli fros make it pretty insufferable unless you work out in the am
It's memed in the same way Walmart is memed. It's the Walmart of gyms. Has everything you would need, if it's in the ghetto it sucks, and most of the time the staff doesn't GAF. I've always just gone based off of the price + the fact it's all over the US if I'm on vacation. You have every machine for every muscle, you are only missing out if you're a powerlifter... but that's such a specific thing - if you're just going for hypertrophy/weight loss, then it's good and I've never had an issue.
Has anyone ever thought of going to a PF, in a shit urban area, at like 3am and just picking up two 45lb plates and walking out?
Hit a couple in a night and you'll have enough to get a good home gym going and it seems like a victimless crime.
They're very clean and can have some decent equipment minus the squat racks, depending on the area. Great for beginners just for cost and range of machines. If you're just starting out you won't appreciate how good free weights are anyway. Just enjoy your easy starter gains and establish a routine. Move up to a better gym once you learn to love gym day
There is a significant number of anons in this thread claiming that a gym with no barbells, racks or deadlift platforms of any kind is perfectly good, and that beginners shouldn’t be using a barbell anyway.
maybe not everyone cares about being a fat moron who can memelift big weights. planet fitness has everything you need to get jacked and thats all anyone gives a shit about.
>Nobody on this board actually lifts do they?
Very few. I am getting huge at Planet Fitness, just have to work around 100lb cable stacks and smith machines. It's a gym for normies, not freaks.
It seems sufficient for my needs. Im doing a variation of SS so Im stuck on a one of the four smith machines for about an hour. Rarely has it ever been where it feels like Im hogging it since if all are taken, one is freed up shortly. Most of the time its people on the cardio machines so I doubt its really an issue.
I did hear the lunk alarm go off once for a superset Boomer who decided to hit every machine and slam it down and make orgasm sounds. It would be funny if it wasnt unintentional. Plus he left all of his stuff on the only leg press machine and claimed it as his own even though he would only use it once every 10 minutes. The lunk alarm was also only rung for maybe 0.25 seconds too.
so I'm guessing you can max out every single machine in planet fitness for 35 reps with one limb then? no? shut the frick up then you fricking homosexual
been to several locations, they all had dumbbells that go to 75 lbs. Smith machines for squat and bench if that's what youre into. non dumbbell free weights are pathetic though. Fixed/non-adjustable sets of ez curl and straight bar weights that go up to 60 lbs total. Literally fricking useless
Compared smith bench and regular bench on strength standards. Apparently they are within 2% of each other, so if you want a big bench you can do the majority of your training on smith and then just do some training on regular bench whenever you get the chance so you can train up the neural pathways. Squat doesn't seem to transfer too well. More than 10% difference and obviously a hugely different activation pattern.
I've definitely noticed what you say about smith vs free weight bench and squat. Trained on smith for a year and half before getting to try free weight again and my squat was completely fricked, bench was pretty much the same.
The environment is weird and there's shit all over the walls talking about how being fat is okay and judgement free zone. I had a membership briefly for the tanning but I hated the atmosphere and couldn't see myself working out there regularly.
They don't have free weight barbells, only thing that sucks about PF. Other than that the hate is overblown. The one I go to doesn't give a shit if you bring gallon jugs and they don't care as long as you aren't bringing attention to yourself. See people drop dumbells, grunt and clang the cable machine weights all the time. Terrible place for powerlifting but for hypertrophy is fine
It’s good for dyel gays that just use dumb bells, really a good starting spot. It’s also a great place to grab a shower and brush your teeth/shave when you’re a working homeless gay.
It's too packed/busy and there are like 3 benches for 80+ people at any given time

NTA I'm getting a new years offer on anytime fitness for $220 for the whole year should I take it?
I've been going to the same PF for 3 years.
All of my 5 friends are from here.
I go here because I can get a free 1-day pass by just creating a new email and signing up in the app (free with 5 minutes of work per visit).
I was originally frugal, but this month I am poor-poor (no debt, but the sum of my checking & savings is $30). >They're no longer 24/7. >They got rid of the scale in the men's bathroom. >There's too many basketballers. >There's no free-weight barbells. >I wish they had a lateral raise machine. >1 time a 20yo Shaneekwua was on the treadmill and the police came up to her and she was escorted out in tears before being placed in handcuffs outside. >1 time a guy lacking socks was wearing transparent Crocs (pseudo-shoes) that had manufacturer-added holes, so everyone could see his feet. >1 time there was a crowd of future-doctors & future-engineers running in the attached mall, and when they ran past the PF and into the outdoors one of them pulled a gun, and I went back into the gym and then the cops showed up. Unsure of the outcome. >There are actual Africans there, and none of them have discovered deodorant. >The employee turnover rate is ~5 months. I've outlasted them all, and feel like a parent that has seen all of his kids move out. >One time a guy was at the free weights and was tackled & arrested by the city police for grand-theft-auto (I have the vid).
Overall, it's the only reason I leave my home other than work & food.
It's a gym that charges 10 bucks. You get what you pay for. Mine got on my nerves recently because they were renovating and the Men's locker room was closed for 3 Months +. Finally got done and then they pulled some bullshit where the new mens locker room became the women's locker room and we got the old locker room. IT's the most ass backward, moron way of running a gym/renovation I swear.

I used to go to that one since the hotels there were better until I started staying in the Pearl District near Mary's and going to the L.A. Fitness.
Frickin pdx planet fitnesses are weird man. I tend to go around 4-5am as I work east coast second shift. Lots of gay shit in that house.
Never been to one, all I can say is the equipment is absolutely sufficient for 95% of lifters.
Planet Fitness is a good gym for people who just need to lose weight and or need their daily exercise
not for bodybuilders lol
You could literally be an IFBB pro with the machines at planet fitness. Whoever convinced you that you need to backseat and deadlift to built a physique lied to you.
at this point just do intermittent fasting or exercise at home
If you are natty it’s absolutely enough for you. And even if you’re not most pros use the smith machine despite the memes
I really like their color palette
if you’re just some homosexual doing a bodybuilding bro-split, they’re not bad at all
pros

cons

Never been to Planet Fitness but their aesthetics are enough to make me try it.Their marketing team did a pretty good job
The only acceptable gym is the homegym. The only acceptable weights are hexbells. The only accessories you need are a flat bench, a pull up bar, and a pull up belt.
Home gyms are shit and you know it.
>drop 3k on equipment and 400 square feet of space, 11/10 inconvenience
>or cheap out and make shit gains
OR you could spend $10 a month and not be a insecure homosexual and exercise in a commercial gym and oggle ass between sets.
Yes because they are no longer 24 hour. Get an Anytime Fitness membership.
No
They’re not for body builders
There for people who want to do cardio or are just starting out
It’s the perfect cheap beginner’s gym
I have a home gym so not my problem.
Only negative about pf I've found so far is that they don't have a way for me to train lower back anymore since I maxed out the back extension machine. Sam Sulek does it at PF and they dont seem to break. Yesterday I broke a cable machine by dropping it too hard.
Will consider getting one now. Forgot Sam used it without issues.
>But I guess I could do back extensions on one of those padded things while holding dumbbells,
Do it with a barbell on your neck.
>barbell
>planet fitness
You've never set foot in a PF.
They had the fixed barbells before I left. I wouldn't be surprised if those are gone too though. When I signed up they had squat racks and everything.
They have fixed barbells that go up to 60 lbs. I'd max it out too quick, but barbell back extensions are supremely based
How much weight do you think Dorian Yates using in that picture?
it's not that the gym itself is bad. yeah they don't have freeweights beyond dumbells but it's clean and has a lot of room. it's the typical clientele that sucks. packs of zoomer boys with their broccoli fros make it pretty insufferable unless you work out in the am

except a power rack

Hit a couple in a night and you'll have enough to get a good home gym going and it seems like a victimless crime.
Just buy some adjustable dumbbells. Spinlock. They're cheap, and probably higher quality than the PF weights.
>is anyone else here a Black person

That’s exactly what I did as a teenager. Turned out fine. You don’t have to be a pussy about everything.
It seems sufficient for my needs. Im doing a variation of SS so Im stuck on a one of the four smith machines for about an hour. i can, im fricking built diffirent

pretty sure this board became an LULZ colony a while ago. very few people here have actually stepped foot in a gym
I hear most don't have free weights for benches and squats while dumbbells only go up to 50lbs.
