Uranium has 0 calories in it. The term calories, when used with food, means bioavailable energy. And yes, a calorie is a calorie is a calorie. There are hundreds of carbs, lipids, and proteins, each that affect your body a little differently. Rather than try to keep track of when you'd gain more weight eating 50g of fructose versus 20g of cholesterol, it's easier to just convert everything down to its caloric value and use it as a rough estimate.

Look up the acceptable error margins used in all virtually of statistics. Statistics with large error margins nevertheless produce useful, testable predictions.

Autophagy is still not fully understood, but I can give you the jist of how we think it works now.
Basically autophagy is happening all the time, lets say this is 5% of what it would be a in perfectly fasted state withough any caloric intake at all (not even a single cal) after 48-72 hours.
Now lets say you are fasting, but get a few calories because you are sipping broth, or triggering insulin responses from drinking artificial sweetner, your autophagy will be like 20-25% the rate instead of your baseline 5%, but still a farcry from the full effect. It's still VERY GOOD even if you can't cut it with a true full fast, just not as good.
autophagy is coming into the spotlight as a possible way for the body to cannabalize cancer cells for nutrients, also stay the frick away from sugar that isn't naturally in the product your are consuming. Also kick the caffineated israelite if you can, its not doing anything for you after a while because you body is so fricking high tolerance for it, you are just drinking that slop to feel normal.
