Bjj or Muay Thai?

Both are same distance.

I’ve been to both before and liked the bjj. I can’t punch for shit it turns out. Biggest turn-off for Muay Thai is cringe pad work and no sparring until you’re good, unlike bjj.

But the Muay Thai place has a glory world champion training at it so for larp reasons I feel compelled to go there.

Anons?

Also… can you just teach yourself striking? Through like shadow boxing and shit.

No, no amount of shadow boxing prepares you for hitting other people, being hit, and reading an opponent. Muay Thai strikes me as slightly better than bjj because there's a greater emphasis on striking than grappling. This will serve you better in a real fight.

I mean I’ve been in fistfights before. What if I’m just built different and can train myself via punching air?

        Ideally both.
For self defense probably Muay Thai, just so you can slap/kick the perpetrator and then bolt.
BJJ is better for when you actually want to take them down, aka stay and fight -- which is probably a bad idea.

Both would run me $400 a month lol. But yeah Muay Thai is probably better for self-defence.

I am also debating which one I should do and I came to the conclusion that I will (once I have a job) start with Muay Thai.
Once I get the hang of delivering punches and kicks I will just get a punching bag and switch to BJJ.
Maybe also try Judo and then after some time after that I will decide on which martial art I will stay with.

No, that’s just how much it costs here, regardless of gym.

Thats insane. I would do BJJ if they also offer wrestling classes, otherwise Muay Thai. Competition focused BJJ is pretty dumb, since it teaches you to pull guard constantly which is no fun at all

The guy does teach stand up. There’s also a sambo class. During sparring I like to start standing as well.

Just do what you find more fun and are more likely to stick with. If you enjoy BJJ more do that, you can start striking at a later date as well

My first time sparring the adrenaline is crazy. Get used to being hit, get used to the cardio

usually in here the pure bjj gym always focused on sport bjj but the bjj in mma gym is hybrid ( mixed with wrestling & combat sambo)

You can learn technique but sparring can't be replaced
