IF you don't see it painted on the floor then your gym probably does not allow lateral raises. All gyms have a designated lateral raises area which they mark with painting on the floor.

This. Lat raises take up a lot of room, so most gyms have you do them in out-of-the-way places - behind other equipment, in side rooms, sometimes even in the lobby. Don't be afraid to look!

If there's no designated lat raise room, gyms usually allow you to do them in the women's restroom.

Never been to a gym without a lat area, are you sure you've looked everywhere? Maybe ask an employee or one of the regulars.

You rerack the fricking dumbbells and go to the cable machine instead. Who the frick wants the most tension during the concentric phase?! You want the most tension when the muscle is stretched.

Lateral raises take up a lot of room and can be dangerous for other patrons of the gym. Most gyms let you take the dumbbells home for later raises.

OP is a newb so you should specify, machines and bands are not allowed but members are allowed to dumbbells(barbells and plates too) as they are free weights

Generally it's considered poor manners to do them where other people may be walking / lifting since you have to flail your arms around taking up alot of space. Most experienced lifters perfer to do them inside the squatting cage so they don't get in others way.

Hi fren, if you’re new to the gym I recommend against doing that exercise. It’s really hard on your shoulders and you can tear your rotator cuff real easy without guidance. There’s a wealth of targeted shoulder workouts that don’t abuse your shoulders as much, including planks, band tap-outs, rows, shoulder flexions, scapular retractions, and more. Always start the lightest you can with these, because they’re targeted to only one set of muscles. Lift safe and good luck!

The one with lifting platform. Some newbies are doing deadlifts thee out of incompetence, but it has always been a lateral raise area. Zoomers have ruined the gym.
