No. Except maybe when you're going through puberty

Yes. Turns out you can still gain muscle even on a caloric deficit

Yes but not quickly. I am natty, lean, and have been getting larger and stronger every year for the last six years however it has been quite slow compared to some of my friends who've gotten fluffier or bulked more aggressively.

Shit takes time, but it's also not a race.

If you're looks at their lifts for signs of improvements, it turns out gaining fat changes some of the leverages making the lifts larger. They very likely either haven't gained much actual muscle in comparison to yourself. Unless they're on 1g+ of test, HGH, and insulin, they probably just gained mostly fat on their bulks.

Yeah whatever I don't really need to cope with that. I have friends that can lift near twice as much as me but they also got fat. The difference between us is I'd probably kill myself if I stopped seeing my abs.

I genuinely think so, but sample size is just my own experience so, probably not good data.

I was just on a cut for 4 weeks, about 1000 cal deficit, lost 3kg or so, improved my all my lifts, week over week.

Once i reach my desired weight, increase to 100-200 calorie surplus until i start to see the definition of my abs slightly fade, then immediately switch back to a slight deficit of 100-200 calories until i get the exact definition of abs back again.

I think people really enjoy being in a category of 'this is my cut phase and its 3 months' or 'this is my bulk phase for 3 months'. I must prefer just using ab definition as a marker, switching between surplus and deficit based on something practical, not just some magical monthly amount of time.

So I have to bulk with 50-100 cals over maintenance?

  5. 6 months ago

    1. yes
    2. yes
    3. yes IF maintenance only aka after reaching end goal
    4. No, while bulking you WILL get fat

You can be big, lean, and natty, BUT only if you're doing maintenance. If you want to grow, fat is unavoidable.

The fact that fat gain is not necessary to gain muscle has been known since the 70's whether or not anyone in the fitness culture has heard of it.

Cap. You have to be above maintenance to gain muscle and excess intake will turn to fat. You can't measure your body's needs to the exact amount because there are too many unknowns hence you'll gain fat while bulking

You literally need like 16 extra calories a week above maintenance to gain muscle. Do the fricking math.

Muscles do not grow from calories. They grow from protein. Your body supplies your muscles with energy when you are running a deficit if you have any fat on your body.

I'm on a pretty decent deficit. Intaking about ~1500calories, some days are sub 1000. Fitbit tells me I'm averaging about 2500-3000calories out.
My weight is going up. From 95kg to 98kg over the past 3 months. Bodyfat doesn't appear to be changing.
