If I eat freshly baked wholegrain bread from my local bakery is that good?

They retain a lot of pesticides, like strawberries. If you eat organic then it isn't a problem.

All carbs break down to sugar in your gut. Complex carbs simply delay the reaction as your body has to break it down which is why complex carbs will provide you with a lower, more steady blood sugar level compared to simple carbs which will spike you and leave your system fairly quickly.

Tubers like sweet potatoes tend to line up better with our micro nutrient requirements. So I would say those.

  16. 11 months ago

Low glycemic index is best. Glycemic index is based off how slowly the food will break down and digest.

Therefore a ball of steel-cut oats frozen in liquid nitrogen is your healthiest carbohydrate.

    >What's the healthiest source of carbs?
"healthiest" is a bit of a misnomer because there are no healthy carbs

Depends what dietary philosophy you are following.
Rice has the least antinutrients out of all grains, so when its paired with meat its pretty awesome fuel.
White bread is also pretty good, and has more micros than rice. Bread gets a bad rap because american bread is poisoned with seed oils, iron, vitamin A, and other nasty additives that cause all sorts of health problems. However if you get fresh baked bread with minimal ingredients, then its actually superior to rice.

Potatos and oats are pretty decent as well, but oats have more antinutrients, and potatos have solanine.

Following the "wisdom of the crowd" and "wisdom of ancient cultures" logic, white rice is the best carb from the asian side of the world, and white bread is the best carb from the european side of the world.
If things like brown rice and barley bread were really superior, they would likely have been adopted as the standard.

Why do Americans eat goyslop bread anyway? Can't they just walk to the local bakery and get a fresh baked loaf each day?

Local bakeries rarely sell loaves of bread. They mostly sell pastries

Most people don't have the need or finances to buy bread every day.

Local bakeries rarely sell loaves of bread. They mostly sell pastries

Mine does, but see above. Most couples might go through a single loaf of bread in a week. Most families might go through two, maybe.

It's also a factor that most cities in America are not walkable, and most people don't live in big, walkable cities. It's not a case of "walking to your local bakery," it's a case of, "let me go out of my way to visit the local shops and pick up some bread while I'm running other errands after work."

This is flawed reasoning. Humanity has also utilized drugs and alcohol for millennia despite their potential harm and addictive qualities, illustrating that widespread use is not always a reliable indicator of what is healthiest or most beneficial. Preferences for certain foods often have more to do with factors such as cultural tradition, ease of production, taste preference, and economic accessibility, rather than their nutritional superiority.
