just get a barbell pad, they're really not pricey. i was using an old pillow when i first tried them out, before i was ready to commit, and even then it sucked ass. a proper pad makes all the difference, doesn't hurt or dig in at all.
When I was in highschool we used like 2 or 3 old towels and get like 600 pounds. I liked to flex and do 405 bare dick but I've heard it's bad to have too much pressure on your hips without protection
