      Gain some muscles morons

The reason you're skinnyfat is because you have zero muscle

I still think this is bait but I guess I'll fricking bite god damnit.

Your body doesn't only burn calories during exercise. It uses energy just to stay alive. That's called your basal metabolic rate (BMR), the amount of calories you would need to maintain your weight if you never got out of bed.

But most people do get out of bed, and so their bodies spend a certain amount of extra energy every day, which is impacted by their height, weight, body fat % and a bunch of other shit (that we don't worry about). That's called your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE).

To lose an average of one pound of fat per week, you need to have a deficit of 500 calories, or 500 less than your TDEE.

In general, you shouldn't even count exercise when you are trying to lose weight. Calculate your TDEE and deficit as if you were sedentary, any exercise you do is just a bonus. The main reason for this is that it is incredibly difficult to accurately measure how much you burn during exercise. Whatever the machines tell you is wrong and is grossly overinflated. To even get close, you would need to get your RMR and VO2 Max levels tested, and then carefully track your heart rate and shit like that during exercise. It's a pain in the dick, and not worth the trouble for what you get out of it.

also, if you are 240 lbs and 5'11", you are fat. There is a regular general thread for that, helpfully called /fat/. All your questions can be answered there. Just ignore the <insert cult diet>schizos when they appear.

Thanks so much, I thought I had to count calories burned from exercise since I didn’t realize the amount of calories burned throughout the day. And yea it makes sense that the machines wouldn’t be completely accurate, and I’ll check out that general thread.

            Exercise doesn't increase TDEE.

OP, is one of those <insert cult diet>schizos that should be ignored.

To be clear, if you want to try keto, or any other diet, go for it. All that matters is that it works and you see results. If it doesn't work, do something else. But anyone who tells you only their one specific way works and nothing else can is full of shit.

Don't I risk doing a too harsh deficit and lose all muscle?

No, as long as you are getting enough protein and lifting, you won't cannibalize too much lean mass. You'll probably lose some, most people do during cuts, but it won't be terrible. And if you are in noob gains phase, you might even add a little lean mass in a deficit. At the very least your CNS will begin adapting.
