completely new to the gym - need advice

getting conflicting info from friend whose in amazing shape and trainer

I am skinny and fat. I want to lose weight and gain strength. Don't wanna get too big but if average human is 5/10 and Mountain from GoT is 10/10, I am shooting for 7/10

Trainer recommended me a bunch of machines that are essentially full body workouts. Lasts 40-60 minutes.

Now friend says I should lift from day 1 using the Stronglifts 5x5 schedule.

Trainer says I should do the full body shit for 2 months and then integrate weight training into things.

Who should I listen to? Do I do both?

Also, should I be eating in excess or cutting calories to lose weight first?

Your certainly can start off with 5x5, maybe do the machines for 2 weeks for fun meanwhile read the SL 5x5 guide here: https://stronglifts.com/5x5/
Run the program to get strong. it will last you for way more than just 2 months, if you have good form and eat and sleep well you can get linear progress to last months on end.
After you plateau, change program to whatever suits your desires and maybe add some variety, that could be a PPL, UL, brosplit, Madcow 5x5, Texas method, 5/3/1, conjugate method.
No need to cut yet, that comes later, now just eat well to perform well in the gym.

Literally no one has accidentally become too big. I wish it were that easy
    >Trainer says I should do the full body shit for 2 months and then integrate weight training into things.
Try both and whatever else that interests you. The key is finding something you enjoy/can put up with. The more it feels like a chore the less likely you are going to get yourself in the gym in the first place

Obviously trust your trainer over your friend and random fitizens. Also he is correct.
Also it doesn't really matter as long as you are consistent and your program isn't completely moronic.

literally just do bench press, overhead press, squats and deadlifts. outside of that you can just spend a few months experimenting with other exercises

Amazing how morons think people become mass monsters by accident. Stick to cardio anon, touching the iron would be too strong for you.

The Stronglift 5x5 stuff prioritizes strength gain over everything else, including aesthetics.
Listen to your trainer if you just want to casually work out and look half decent at the end of it.

    >Part 1
Was in the exact same situation as you, but I didn't have anyone on my shoulder telling me what to do.
I was fat, weak, and needed to change, and I did, so here's what I did.
Rule #1: Clean eating. For the first few months especially, stay away from overly sugary and fatty foods, but from NOW ON, you cannot eat fried foods, nothing with basedbean or canola oil, nothing with corn syrup, avoid artificial flavors and colors. This will help clean out your system of the garbage that made you fat in the first place. Clean, relatively unrefined foods is what made our ancestors strong. They'll work for you.
If you have a big sweet tooth, get berries and fruit to satisfy it. It will be hard at first, but you will learn eventually to enjoy the complexity of natural fruits and sugars over the artifical, overwhelming syrupy sweetness of candy and other sweet snacks. If you simply MUST have chocolate or candy from time to time, go to your local vitamin shop and pick up some Protien bars and protien candy, Quest peanut butter cups are excellent, and so are Barebell Protien Bars. Both excellent alternatives.
    Rule #2:
Every day. If you can, go to the gym every day. I go 6 days a week, for religious reasons, but if Sunday wasn't a holy day I would work out 7.
I would work out 2-3 hours a day, sometimes 4. For the first few months, I would spend an hour or two weight lifting, and then 30-45 minutes on the exercise bike. USE THE BIKE. It is the most efficient means of burning calories and keeping the shock pressure off your joints. You will burn more, faster on the exercise bike than anywhere else. Treadmills are good if you want to train running/walking, but as a fat burning exercise its extremely inefficient, most fatties frick up and waste a frickton of time on the treadmill. Do yourself a favor and take the bike.
Weights should be trained with arms one day, legs the next. For the fastest results, I worked in reductions...

...for my routine. "What is a reduction?" Its where you do your max weight for a relatively small number of reps, and then drop the weight and raise the reps to further tear and tone the muscle and make it even bigger.
      Example:
      I bench 185 lbs for 5 reps, 3 sets then I bench 145 lbs for 10 reps, 3 sets.
I always workout in sets of 3, again for religious reasons, but if you wanna do 4, or 2, depending on how you feel on a day, it should work the same.
      Rule #3:
      EAT. MEAT.
You have to eat meat, and the more meat the better. Eggs too, milk, and other animal products. Don't go keto, keto will leave you exhausted and is only for diabetics. Unless you are diabetic or at threat for diabetes you shouldn't be doing keto, BUT EAT MEAT. I reccomend buying a grill, and eating a fat hunk of meat, porkchops, steaks, chicken, turkey, lamb, etc, at least 4 times a week. Its the key to insanely fast weight loss and muscle gain at the same time.
This is what worked for me, and I believe it can work for you too, bro. Good luck.

Yo how much weight did you lose and are you considering getting that sag removed?

100 lbs in about a year, and unfortunately I'm too poor for that anytime soon. You can't see them really, but there are also severe stretch marks on my arms and lower back. My biceps would probably look a lil bigger if not for that.
Obesity is a b***h bros. Don't end up like me.

    Your friend is right
Most PTs are essentially used car salesmen for gym machines except you have to pay them
They take you around the lot to try the machines
Most of them have no clue what they're talking about or doing

It doesn’t really matter. As long as you are doing some form of full body program, and as long as it isn’t totally moronic, you should make progress over time, at least for the first 6-12 months.

If you don’t make progress, you can try SL 5x5, since that program works pretty well.
