He had a better idea of what Third Impact would result in than almost anyone else and was more than happy to be part of an ocean of LCL if it meant he could meet Yui again in some form, but one can also imagine Shinji and Asuka on the beach at the end of EoE as Gendo’s vision for himself and Yui.
