deadlift is not a back exercise you absolute moron

        Anonymous

Yeah because you can totally lift a load that's attached at the shoulder joint using your ass, hams, and quads without transmitting force through the back (which requires isometric engagement of the entire back musculature)
        Man you dumb

You should ideally not be moving your back during a deadlift, so you're essentially doing an erector spinae isometric hold.

It's funny when people say deadlifts are back builders when the deadlift just isometrically works out the back. Just imagine if you actually contracted your erector spinae and put it through its range of motion under load.

The back loading in the deadlift is desirable.

Something that people should keep very clear in compound movements is that you never go all out on them. You'll still have great gains from them since you still get a lot of mechanical tension because you can lift shittons of weight.
Specially with deadlifts. Your lower back is probably the weakest link in the lift, so you have to stop it before your form starts breaking down.
I'm getting mad ass, hamstrings and strength gains from doing deadlifts again.

Sounds like the deadlift; uses more muscle mass than any other lift (maybe except for the squat) and you only need to do a single set of 5 every week or two.

Frick off. The best workout is the one you’ll do. Forcing someone to do 4 lifts they hate is going to make them quit the gym after three months. The real advice is try every lift for each muscle and pick your favorites so that you hit everything. Being optimal doesn’t mean shit if you can’t keep doing your workouts cause you hate it so much.

deadlifts should not be done traditional style imo. I deadlift sumo with very little pressure on my back. I do it because I love the exercise, its movement and the forearm gains.

I also do higher volume and lower weight.

        >everyone saying sumo is cheat codes and doesn't count
If that's so why do the top levels of powerlifting competition go almost exclusively conventional as the body weight (and weight lifted) climbs, despite the fact that there is no regulation on whether sumo or conventional is used?
Wouldn't they all be doing sumo if it was such an advantageous stance?

          Anonymous

If you just think about what makes sumo easier it should be clear why it does benefit heavier guys as much. Sumo is all about 2 things:

          1. getting the bar closer to the hips and thus reducing the moment arm from bar to the primary fulcrum (hips).

          2. Reducing the ROM.

Both are accomplished by standing as wide as possible and thus getting the legs out of the way so the hips can get close.

If you're a real big guy it doesn't work as well:

          1. You can't get relatively as wide as the little guys because the plates are in the way.

          2. Bigger guys have bigger stomachs and hips which limits how close the bar can get.

You're welcome for the explanation. Anyone who doesn't compete should never pull sumo because it doesn't make you as strong as conventional since you're overcoming a smaller moment arm over a smaller ROM.

I hit 345lb PR fighting demons late last night
My test is surging. Vitality is coursing through my veins. My back minimally sore, and it shoots my gains through the roof with as little as one main workout every 10 days, and supplemental cardio and lightweight work on off days.
Maybe I’m not the norm, maybe your test is low, but deadlifts seem pretty great and the accomplishment after hitting a new PR in any lift let alone my deadlift is indescribable

Deadlifts are the GOAT exercise for overall muscular development. Traps, delts, lats, hamstrings, entire posterior chain. Never as sore as when I hammer some heavy deads.

split squats are better, the reason why is that you can do them with dumbbells. Dumbbells > barbells in terms of total muscular development because you have to engage your entire body including your forearms and scapulae to stabilize the dumbbells, the unilateral aspect adds a motherfricking shit ton of extra work from all your lateral and medial stabilizing muscles like adductors abductors and all the those anterior and posterior ankle muscles.

      Single leg romanian deadlift
      split squats
      regular squats

all you need for leg day that will build your lower back.

        Anonymous

No. Split squats are great for the stabilization, but you can lift more, something like 20-30% more, with a barbell and engaging both sides of ur body. You can do a split squat with a barbell, but for the sake of convenience I'd l that exercise in particular is easier with dumbells.

Agreed, powerlifting is for cheaters who want to look and seem as strong as possible in the most absolutely ideal conditions, i.e. lifting in the tiniest ranges of movement for each joint and muscle involved, and working them in their absolutely most mechanically optimal position. They don't want to look good, they don't want functional strength... they want to leverage technicalities and mechanical trickery for optimal "performance" in their "sport" which happens to be mindfrickingly boring and stupid. I would rather watch the WNBA

deadlifts are the ultimate pointless ego lift, but its true crime is that even as an ego lift it is not particularly impressive or cool or skilled-looking, and in fact it might be the single most annoying lift to be around. The women who deadlifters think are miring them are actually looking over because they're just fricking annoyed that you keep throwing onto the ground your bar loaded with 275 like you just repped out 600lbs. No one likes being around deadlifters-- even if you have headphones on, the shit being thrown or dropped onto ground can be felt by anyone nearby.

As an exercise, it's pretty bleak. If you consider each joint involved in the deadlift movement in isolation, they are each being run through (generously) 1/3 of their total ranges of motion. The hips, the knees, and the ankles are moving very little compared to squats or most other leg/hips exercise. And what's worse is that each are basically functioning in their most mechanically optimal position, and all their associated muscles are also in their most ideal mechanical positions and being flexed through a small ROM. If you think about it, this defies the very spirit of lifting to get strong or big, which paradoxically demands that muscles are worked inefficiently or outside their most ideal parameters. Remember: metabolic and mechanical "efficiency" would have us sitting immobile all day for a lifestyle with minimal expenditure of energy. Lifting is about artificially inefficient movements/conditions to get stronger and bigger. This is also why powerlifting is gay and for people with gay priorities.

And the final crime: deadlifts builds are fricking ugly. Deadlift-focused lifters have the quintessential T-rex build that everyone makes fun of in people who exclusively do SS. There is nothing attractive or redeeming that it works or builds. Weird chunky oversized butt and upper thighs, underdeveloped calves/lower legs, underdeveloped upper body, underdeveloped arms. Disgusting!
