Dear Fit,
I have turned 25 and I am currently looking to take up a combat sport. Can people please recommend me some and why? I used to do taekwondo as a young teenager but gave it up. I feel like i should/need to get into something again.
I am thinking of either Taekwondo, Jujitsu or BJJ. I haven't really considered boxing as I feel a little more intimidated by it but a little curious at the same time. I am just looking to do some physical excercise, a bit of sparring and maybe down the line even competing in amateur competitions.
Also, is age much of a factor? Honestly I feel quite intimidated joining at 25.

If it's for self defense, MMA or anything used in MMA for obvious reasons. If not, there are health benefits found in many traditional martial arts.
>I haven't really considered boxing as I feel a little more intimidated by it but a little curious at the same time.
Boxing is oldschool enough that there are still a lot of schools run by 60 year olds that have seen Rocky too many times, but also commonly known enough that there's a shitload of 'box your way to a smaller waist' punch-based-cardio gyms as well. Just find something staffed by likeable people that have trained even just locally successful fighters.
>Also, is age much of a factor?
Yes, in all the obvious ways.
>Honestly I feel quite intimidated joining at 25.
Yeah you're going to, that's how that feels.
I didn't really think about MMA. Don't the others carry some kind of self defense bonus too?
Also so what are you saying regarding age being a factor? Don't bother?
I'll think about boxing too.
>Don't the others carry some kind of self defense bonus too?
"MMA" is just what you call fighting without being constrained to the rules or principals of a single school. Imagine Joe Rogan wailing on a heavy bag with some standard boxing technique before throwing Tae Kwon Doe style kicks, as opposed to rigidly sticking to a single discipline because that discipline provides the best ligament health or something.
>Also so what are you saying regarding age being a factor? Don't bother?
When I said "the obvious ways" what did you interpret that to mean? An excuse to give up?
Just take up bum fighting. If you live in a city there are bums all over the place. Go fight them
Learn MMA. Depending on the club the emphasis more the wrestling, the boxing/kick boxing or the BJJ grappling.
I m training MMA in a club who emphasis the ground.
I'll see what clubs are around. What age did you start?
Training combat sports for self defense is fricking moronic. Train combat sports because you want to test your endurance getting in a ring with someone and throwing punches and getting punched. Or tackling or whatever.
Do krav maga and carry a weapon if you're actually in a scenario where you are getting attacked by people. I'm not a meathead moron with a small dick so I've never gotten into a street fight. I got mugged one time and it was by like 8 dudes. Nothing would have protected me.
People who train combat sports for self defense are unironically more likely to get seriously hurt by going out and getting into a fight with an overinflated sense of confidence.
Everyone always says train MMA for self defense lmao. "Most fights end on the ground". Yeah in fricking UFC under MMA rules. Every street fight I've ever seen was either over after a few wild punches or ends on the ground with five people kicking one guy in the head. Your BJJ isn't going to save you there.
All I want to get out of this is having more self confidence, respect, get more physical activity and have fun obviously. I don't think I would choose krav maga but I get your point. I'm just not in this for self defense.
Yes I see your point. No I'm not looking for an excuse but just trying to gauge exactly what to expect. Too be honest I'm more worried about the social aspect. I'm not autistic but a bit shy at times especially at the beginning
>I'm more worried about the social aspect.
I have not met more pleasant and accommodating people than at a high quality, reputable MMA gym. A few things to keep in mind, first is that everyone there is working hard to achieve a noble goal together and so as long as you're a good sport who's putting in effort people in general will be happy to have you there. Secondly, everyone recognizes how difficult and intimidating this can be to even choose to start to begin with, and as such make quite an effort to not scare off new people.
Literally just be yourself.
You're a moronic pussy, there are hundreds of videos on YouTube that prove otherwise
And Youre moronic and weak for not refuting him
This is exactly how I expect someone who trains MMA for self defense to speak lmao
You’re a fricking moron.
I can bet that you're the onion boy who hangs out on reddit mma and looks like your pic. You've been training for a couple years and suck at sparring but think that you could win a street fight because you have an advantage over an untrained fighter. You're wrong. Some fatass with 30 pounds on you and a couple of drinks in him could knock you the frick out easy.
No one ever won a street fight with a submission.
Boxing. You can do it by yourself.
Taekwondo, Jujitsu, and Wrestling all require sparring really to be effective.
I'm starting college and there is a boxing club i might try out there. The sparring in taekwondo and jujistu would actually appeal to me, if thats what you mean?
Noted , thanks.
I see, has this happened to you?
You okay son? btw it's spelled you're
> I see, has this happened to you?
Nah, like I said I’m not a martial artist but I’ve heard about a surge of “mcdojos” popping up here and there from lurking around and doing research. Oddly enough, I’ve also seen random for lease buildings become dojos around my area too, so maybe they’re more common that I think.
Ok gotcha, so make sure its a reputable club.
go to an MMA gym that does striking and grappling, usually Muay Thai and BJJ. Starter course you get gi and gloves with a few weeks of lessons for a hundred bucks.
Do the starter lessons and see which one you like.
I started when i was 37 and it's great. Everyone is super nice. BJJ especially is full of nerds.
I’m not a martial artist in any sense but what I can say is that you should always do some research on the gyms/schools that are around you. Wouldn’t wanna become a clown because the guys there taught you wrong as a joke
I'm 29 and just started BJJ a month ago. I'm gonna start doing muy thai too and then start entering fights. I have nothing else to lose, I'll probably get my ass kicked, but hopefully I'm naturally talented. Also, I'm still younger than like half the dudes in the gym and I have lots of energy. And at 5'10" I'm taller than like 90% of the class. Idk I kinda feel like a beast even though I still get submitted by the women in the class
Don't do it, you'll get monkeypox.
