You can do whatever you want, but the proper way to use the erg is to use legs for 60% of the movement in terms of effort. 30% should be back, and 10% should be arms.
You really can’t beat this video for basic technique:

Remember to have fun and don’t strain your back too hard. good luck OP
You could, if you wanted to be slow
There are better ways to hit arms anyway if that's your goal
The moving back and forth motion/leg motion feels off when I do rows. The upper body and lower back movements feel fine, but the pushing and pulling with legs part feels off, hence I was wondering if I omit it how much of the whole efficacy would I be missing out on.
the leg drive is the majority of the power/stroke. watch https://www.concept2.com/indoor-rowers/training/technique-videos
try to separate it out into parts (arms only bend when your legs are straight, arms come back over straight legs), try to have a short strong stroke and longer recovery as you comfortably return to the catch. you should be able to maintain like 2:00-2:10/500 pace at a low (18-20) stroke rate. be careful when you're at your most compressed and about to drive, that's where you can hurt your back if you don't have good form
film yourself taking a couple strokes, review compared to a form video, make a webm if you want advice
Push with legs then pull with arms.
Reset arms, then torso, then legs, and repeat.
Rowing is actually pretty fricking hard to do correctly and produce lots of force. Heaps of spergs at my gym just go and do what you said, only rowing with their arms and torso. They think they’re rowing hard but they look fricking moronic.
Search a YouTube video on how properly use and Urg at least.
I use it for a warm up. I can wear my lifting shoes instead of bringing my running shoes and get a good wake up before lifting. Legs to pull, arms and shoulder to lock out.
moron
You know when someone knows so little they think the test is easy? That's you.
based on what? I rowed in college
yes, you can do arms and body warming up. no, it doesn't make any sense to get on an erg for that

Are you separating the parts correctly? It feels unnatural at first but if you do it enough becomes more fluid

"Body and arms rowing" from the video looks/feels optimal, but I'll try the full drive tomorrow.
6'2, 200lbs btw, if that matters.
>go to the lake
>use a rowing machine
>let the canoe sit on the shore
native americans died so this could happen

>rowing shell

mogged brownie

I think turkish oil wrestling is more your speed
quit gaslighting me, and if you like sweating in a boat with men on each side of you then i support you and your freedom to live that lifestyle

You could, if you wanted to be slow

Go for it
Push with legs then pull with arms.
Reset arms, then torso, then legs, and repeat.

It's a majority leg exercise. You can use just your arms and torso, but you'll tire out quickly.
Biggest meme machine there is.
I rowed but I have to agree, the only thing it's superior for is for getting better at rowing
Well yeah sure, for thousands of years people rowed from a fixed seat.
Much more slowly than can those with a moving seat
How the frick do you row in water with a moving seat?
