Do rowing machines actually do anything or are they some sort of meme? I don't think I've ever seen anyone use the one at my gym.

maybe they're rowing outside
You probably don't see people using them because it's harder than just walking on a treadmill but not heavy enough for lifters. It really does wonders for the legs and back as long as you're using good technique and not just sliding forward and backward. I burn more calories in 20 minutes of rowing than 30 minutes of jogging.
t. lifter who thought yoga was for ninnies until I tried hot vinyasa. Kicked my lunglet ass and came out of that class sweating more than I ever have.
This. It's too hard for normies because it's not idiot proof like a stairmaster. It'll also frick your back if you don't get your technique nailed proper.
Kudos, anon. I' at 5-7k now on off-days, but 10k is the aspiration.
This, worthless wastes of space wont attempt anything that isn't Kosher approved. The will chug their 10 L a day of Coca Cola and eat their 12 cheesburgers though.
I've decided not to use one after I realized how little cardio forms contribute to each other.
I bicycle every day, I might need to run from time to time, rowing? literally never
This is the dumbest thing I"ve read on this site in awhile. Cardio is one of the most transferable fitness archetypes
I did it today, just to change up my cardio.
Wasn’t really a fan. I’m sure it has its purpose, but I prefer either stairs, jump roping, or walking at in incline for cardio.
I used to warm up with them. Would put on Bury The Light and see if I could row 2km before the song ended (not very impressive I know)
Was pretty kino, bit then I moved house and had to switch gym to one that doesn't have a rowing machine. Now I just run for warmup, which is way less fun and harsher on my legs.
i row 8-10k every other day (but i am very autistic)
how do you bros pace your longer sessions to fit an off-day or every-other-day profile? i do cardio once/week (powerlifting focused), and like to row a 2k where i go
250 steady-state (~2:00 split)
250m sprint (~1:30-1:35 split)
alternating until i hit the 2k. only takes me a few minutes total but i am GASSED by the end; any more and i feel like i would not recover in time for lifting the following week. how in the world are you doing 5+k on a regular basis without eating into lifting progress?
I tend to row at about 23/24spm but go easy on the intensity. Basically doing LISS. If I feel cheeky I do one of them Apple fitness+ rowing workouts or some rowing vid on YouTube, which is usually more like HIIT. but I find that burns me out too much if I do it more than once or twice a week.
thanks anon. i haven't paid much attention to my spm, except that they are obviously higher when i am sprinting. will play around with lower intensity and see how that feels
why don't you try it and find out OP?
I do around 5km every day(often the WOD) unless I have something planned and take a rest day
Most people who hate the rower just hate it because they don't know how to use it. When you have proper form and get in rhythm it's like achieving Nirvana.
It's a form of cardio that uses pretty much every part of your body.
>are they some sort of meme
It's mostly a meme but not because it's bad but because rowers are insufferable people who can't see why anyone would enjoy a more natrual feeling form of cardio. You don't see the "benefits" of rowing until you've done it a pretty long time and if you look up rowing routines there's like nothing between woman dumb and erg/drag autism that won't make any sense unless you're on a concept2. Also the brand whoring and shilling is huge even here.
OMG Guys people like some thing I dont omg omg fat for a reason lardo.
>its only good if you use a concept2
>omg i hate gays who shill brands
Pick 1 Black person
NTA, but concept2 is THE standard. I’ve rowed on about 6 different brands depending on what the gym had at the time over the years. Some where decent, most were just… off somehow. Hard to explain, really. There’s a reason rowgays recommend the concept2.
kek. I would pay money to see someone do this for 30mins at >32spm.
as a long time runner lover, who lost his cardio game over the years due to work/school/life, getting a rowing machine was one of the best decisions ive made in a while and something I wish I had done years ago.
Full body workout, low impact, low volume so you can workout at any time of day/night. So far worth the money.
They're not a meme, they just aren't idiot proof. So a lot of people try them and then do something where they don't have to worry about proper form, etc.
I bought a concept2 years ago, and its my preferred form of cardio. Mostly because I fricked my joints up in the military and its low impact and easily accessible (just sits in my home gym).
But I was moronic when I first started trying to really use it regularly. For instance, I was not initially aware that you are not supposed to row on the highest drag setting except for maybe short power/sprint workouts every now and then.
>I was not initially aware that you are not supposed to row on the highest drag setting except for maybe short power/sprint workouts every now and then
Wait, are you not ? The ones at my gym are pretty weak, if I don't crank them up to ten I don't feel a thing.
Drag factor is one thing you can crank, but you mostly control intensity through spm and the force you apply when pushing back and pulling during the drive. What’s your split?
That's because they are full of dust. As they get dirtier you have to crank them higher to get the same drag factor. For most people, drag factor should be about 120-135.
Never saw this stuff irl
Is it the same as pic related? It's a back workout
Only in form. Your pic is for weightlifting, not cardio. You can make it cardio with high, fast reps and low weight, but you'll look like a moron while doing it.
I somehow fricked up my knees on rowing machines. You need to stretch and get your form perfect. Now I do bike cardio.
I wish I could do it, I fell in love with it in another gym that had one, it's perfect to activate your lower back and legs.
