Do you drink tea?

In my experience it tends to wake me up better than coffee or yerba.

Where can you find good quality Da Hong Pao? I have a tea store in my town that gets really good quality Tie Guan Yin and Silver Needles but I can't find anywhere with Da Hong Pao, which sucks since I really wanna try it.

Real one is too expensive because theres like 5 original producing trees left . There are artificial ones that scale in price depending on quality. Just find a good seller online.

          Anonymous

The "artificial" ones are clones of clones of the remaining 5 mother trees, so they nearly taste the same except they're much younger. In worst cases, they're clones of clones of clones of a mother, but they're still genetically identical.

Drinking any tea outside of asia literally means you drink some shitwater. Enjoy yer lipton shite. All the best teas have always come from japan and china

      Anonymous

      For the Chinese side.
Black, White, Green, Yellow, Oolong, Hei, Puerh.
Personal recommendation would be a Oolong tea, particularly a Tieguanyin as it's butter/savory/flowery, and it isn't too hard on your stomach as a green/black.

According to wikipedia for the US "about 85% of the tea consumed is served cold, or iced".

Is this actually true? It sounds outlandish. I have never drunken cold or iced tea that I can recall (it would have been before I was 10 if I did because I would recall it), yet here we have tea every meal and another literally just called "tea".

Americans drink sweet iced tea or Arizona/Lipton.

It's not a magic potion. It's a hydrating beverage with more history than any one religion. Drink tea because it's delicious and a good hobby.

          Anonymous

Keep in mind that this is in my own experience and that results may vary, but, Green tea wakes me the frick up. Oolong make me drowsy/drunk. Puerhs, specially shou or aged Shengs make me feel a light cannabis high, and blacks don't do anything for me other than upset an empty stomach. Honestly the drunk/high effect are randomized and either puerh or oolong can get you that. But for green tea, you have to make sure you're drinking it the year that it's picked for it to be good.

Mostly because teagays definitely know something the vast majority of Westerners do not: good tea. It's esoteric and fun. Couple that with a fairly high barrier to entry and you have a natural gatekeeping. For that reason, it's a great hobby. Go lurk on IST for the tea thread. It's one of the better hobby generals that isn't on /tg/.

Does the tea general have a lot of good information on tea and teaware sources too? I only ask because I have a shop in my town with good quality oolongs, blacks, and great sets for single steeping, but they don't sell gongfu tea sets and the selection of oolongs and puers is really limited.

All in all I'm pretty new to tea, I started drinking it around February and am just trying to learn anything I can. For gongfu preparation I go by this guide: https://thechineseteashop.com/pages/gong-fu-cha-the-complete-guide-to-making-chinese-tea , but I might see what kind of info I can find on IST if the general is good

        is Puerh tasty

          Anonymous

          It's an acquired taste.
Shou puerh is what's most commonly sold in western markets, the cheap ones taste godawful, like fish and mud.
The good ones taste like dried berries with petrichor and leather.
Sheng puer on the other hand, is more complex and has more variety of taste.

I have Pu'er tea bags I get from my local Chinese supermarket but I feel like I'm not getting the full experience. I would have thought fermented tea would taste very different to regular tea but the bags I've been getting just taste like tea. Good tea, but just tea. I'm thinking of ordering loose leaf to see if the flavor is different.

      Anonymous

Loose leaf puer is a little hard to find in good quality. You're looking for compressed tea, like cakes. If you want to try a step up, buy a 100 gram tuo or 500 gram sleeve of Taetea V93 off of Amazon. Don't buy other teas from there, imo.

      Anonymous

If you drink from tea bags it's 100% shit.
Good tea is paid by weight and is loose leaf. Get a compressed puerh cake and pry it up.

Antioxidants are a meme. They can't get inside to the mitochondrial DNA. Plus I don't like bitter teas.

      Anonymous

No, you get something else. Aside from the taste element, if you just consumed all the tea leaves raw you would get a lot of tannins and other things that aren't good for you as well as toxins in it, similarly if you just ate coffee raw. Why not just eat all the wheat in the field? A lot of plants are turned into pharmaceuticals, why not just eat them all and get the benefits?

There is one tea though that you consume all of the leaves - matcha tea. You may have heard of it, it's become a bit of a meme online. Only the best quality leaves are taken and at a very young part of their development before they have matured fully. You can then grind that up into matcha powder and drink it. It's delicious.
