There's a growing (but still small) number of researchers that are starting to believe that the "muscle microtear" theory behind increasing muscle mass is actually false. There's good evidence to suggest that an increase in muscle mass is simply a product of increased testosterone. Working out a muscle stimulates bloodflow to that area, and the free testosterone in blood stimulates muscle growth. It seems that an increase in testosterone is produced when the body reaches a certain threshold in physical stress and a psychological feeling of success.

That actually has been debunked, at least there's been studies that show no correlation between microtears and hypertrophy. Pretty much the only reliable growth stimulus has been mechanical tension.
I don't have the source on hand, but I read a few studies that found that there is an "optimal" amount of tension a muscle needs to receive to stimulate growth, and it has only weak correlation with the amount of weight or reps in an exercise. You can achieve the optimal tension either through flexing as hard as you can with light weights or with heavy weights. It takes more reps to get there with light weights, but only like 20-30% more. Basically that amount of optimal tension is the stress threshold level that signals the testes to produce extra testosterone in that moment.
Case in point: you can gain large amounts of muscle by simply injecting testosterone with absolutely no exercise. *Clearly* testosterone levels are what signals the body to produce additional muscle fiber.
However I want to add: this is only referring to muscles and tendons. To produce denser bones, heavy weights are required because the physical weight of an object is what produces lateral tension down the length of the bone.

I've literally done all those things natty except I do full ROM and I just don't like eating much other than eggs, meat, milk so have a really clean diet but I can add in sugar and I make gains.
