no one said baby weights or high reps except you. i said if you're maxing out the muscle the number on the bar doesn't matter because the muscle gets stimulus through induced tension not weight. if you BSS or lunges max out your quads at 5lb then your problem is not having quads

does the weight matter or not?

                Anonymous

no, the tension on the muscle matters. if you used some ridiculous leverage to maximize tension on the muscle with 5% of the weight, you would provide the same stimulus as maxing it out without that. you need less weight to max out on BSS than squats but the point is to provide stimulus to the muscle not to move the most weight. otherwise lifting would be about cargo loading not muscle building.

                Anonymous

okay so if you can't find a way to use ridiculous leverage with 5lbs, then what do you do?

because the point of the hypothetical was to demonstrate to you that maximizing weight is not the same as maximizing muscle stimulus so you could process how you can do the same work with less weight moronchama, not to tell you to lift nothing but 30 foot long lever arms. last attempt to reason with you

                Anonymous

why does that matter? the subject at hand is one where you very much can which is why this thread exists.

"big" weights are possible only due to a very advantageous position in a given exercise (for example squats with an ideally balanced barbell in the ideal position on your back)
taking a less advantageous position (like in bss) makes it possible to achieve the same kind of stimulus with using less weight, usually putting less pressure on your connective tissue (which is ideal)

                spells it out well.
when you can't do that you just don't. so?

Just try. I use a 20 kg plate in each hand for 12 reps (2-3 sec. eccentric) and have squated 170kg for two reps with 1-2 reps in reserve. It also depends on your footing.
