I'm going to be honest, this is a form issue. As a fat (205lbs) short (5'3") female (biological) I can easily do a 2:15 for 10k. I'm about to do it rn, as a matter of fact. You should have absolutely no issue getting sub 2:00 if your form is correct. Look up rowing standards on Concepts website. Find what you should be aiming for. Once you find that, go to concepts how to row area. Read it. Watch the videos. Learn to use the machine correctly and this won't be a problem.

      Rowing doesn't work arms?

Rowing is more lower body. It’s a full body sport, but the legs are so massive by comparison to the other muscles used that it’s practically a lower body exercise. Forearms will be worked out if you were like me and had shit form with shit rowers and had to grip onto the oar slapping the water with your dear life.
That said, there are plenty of rowers with great upper bodies. If you go in with a good upper body, you’ll use it. If you go in bottom heavy like I did, you will be super lower dominant.
      Monster cardio though.

I think my best 2k time ever was around 6:30, and that was on the varsity crew team in college when I was training year round. (It was a club sport, we weren’t elite or anything). Hitting a 6:30 2k was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.

        god damn dude

Pic rel from just now, 6’6” 99kg. Obviously I mostly do cardio

What's up fellow rowing bros. I have hip problems so I started rowing for cardio and it feels fucking amazing. The gym I go to has the concept 2s and I really want to get one but I'm not trying to spend $900 on a rowing machine. Any recommendations for a less expensive rowing machine?

The waterrower is the cheaper C2, but it’s shit. If you want to compare times online and not have the machine break every 2 months you need to wait for a cheap second-hand C2 to be available in your area. You could ask around at local clubs, too

Very nice, three guys in my team can do sub six but two of them are fat. If you aren't, that's even more impressive

Yeah I’m like 2kg over racing weight. If I cut down to 96kg then I get decent abs, but my rowing gets way slower. I’ll race around 97-98kg, whatever makes the boat go fastest

Impressive, I’m 6:18 @84kg, looking to get close to 6 next year so I can have a stab at Henley diamonds and get on tv lol

Yeah I’ll be at Henley, that whole week is always fun as fuck

Damn, I'm almost exactly your height and weight (an inch shorter), way more buff and far slower on the erg. I really should train more. I mostly just row on the water and lift weights nowadays because my team is in the sprint league (Ruderbundesliga) but now I feel like a fraud, id probably be at 6:25 maybe right now

This shit. All these people in here expecting to get a buffed up body from rowing are retarded. Runners and swimmers who don't lift also look small. You don't row because it'll get you big, you row because it's a full body cardio that will keep your heart beating past 40 and help your gains, not give them to you, retards. Row for the fun and sport of it, not to be more autismo in your failing quest to be aesthetic.

No one's pointing and laughing at you dude. You're fine, just a beginner. I've seen people fit as fuck hop on a rower and proceed to do half an hour of what I can only describe as kipping on the machine, it's natural to not understand how to use your body when doing a new thing, even if you know your way around a gym. Just look up some form videos and record yourself so you can watch it over and make sure you're using your body to the best of it's ability and not working towards hurting yourself.

Wait until a c2 goes on sale locally. Don't get anything but a c2. You will regret it if you get in to rowing and you realize that anything but a c2 is gyping you, and you will also regret it if you decide not to get in to rowing and sell the machine only to realize all rowers besides c2 lose resale value immediately.

isn't rowing one of those upper class sports that you only get into if mommy and daddy pay for everything of you're one of the lucky plebs that ended up at a high ranking institution?

I bought a c2 on a whim with my neet bucks a few years back and liked it so much I started following the races and training for a marathon within the year. Found some clubs in the area, went from there. You really don't need anything if you have a gym membership, most of them have concepts.

Which of the C2s should one get? There's a bunch of different models (D, E, maybe something else; P3, P4?)

                Anonymous

Model D and E are the same, just a higher seat on E. D is the typical choice and what I have. PM3 and PM5 differ in menu and bluetooth ability. I don't think there's anything wrong with having a PM3, but obviously the ability to connect your phone to the app and sync everything online through bluetooth instead of wire is nice. If you have the ability to get an older one for cheaper, that's probably your best bet since the monitors are available on concepts site and you can upgrade it by just buying a better one.

How can a noob like me row 500 meters in under 1:45? Been training on the erg for a few weeks, been struggling. I'm 5' 9" and 235 pounds if that helps.

        Anonymous

Do you mean one max 500m piece, or holding a 1:45 over a longer period of time?

I’m pretty sure world record 500m times are held by powerlifters, cause it’s literally a bunch of deadlifts as fast and hard as possible for just over a minute.

In general though, make sure you’re technique is right (legs-body-arms on the drive, arms-body-legs on the recovery) and then have the rate at like 25-30 and you’ll get there easy

          Anonymous

One max 500m. The rower is one heck of a an ass kick for me ego considering how difficult it is to get good on.

Just learn from the best. https://youtu.be/nGbIuEdp-Q8
But that's a pretty specific sprinting technique with a shortened leg stroke, if you're serious about rowing, don't start out with this or you'll pick up bad habits

              Anonymous

Thanks. I should add I'm specifically doing this for a physical fitness test that requires a single 500m sprint as one of the two events required to pass. I have to admit considering how much of a kickass workout it is I will incorporate it as a part of my permanent cardio workout, however the goal for now is to get my currently slimming fat ass to do 500m as quick as possible, right after a timed 1.5 mile run.

Used to row back all through highschool.
It got me in great shape but I hated every second of it.
I hate the stupid fucking spandex outfits (I don't hate staring at the female rowing teams asses though) they make you sit in for hours that itch when they get sweat in them.
    I hated the 6am practices.
I hate the fucking coxswain yelling at you while you're exhausted and if you act snappy with him at all because you're trying your best you get pulled aside by the coach to talk about how you need to give him more respect.
I hated the hour drive to get to the clubhouse.
I hated 50 minutes of straight rowing while everyone silently listens to their ipods.

      Anonymous

Also used to row in highschool, and I loved it after the first season tbqh
      >didn't mind the spandex uniforms, the ones we had were comfy
      >practiced in the evenings, pulling into the dock as the sun was setting
      >had two main coxswains my varsity years and both were good, one being an absolute bro
      >always sat stroke so I got to talk to the cox directly
      >45min drive to boathouse but it was a scenic drive along the river we rowed on
      >practice was two 8s or four 4s, sometimes had the novice men's team join us
      >mfw rowing in the heavy weight 4 while doing indian rows and absolutely flying to the front of the pack
The downside were the indoor practices. I fucking hate erg machines and the worst ones were when we did "dirty dozen" practices which were twelve 500m sprints with 2 minutes in between sprints.
