It starts to make more sense when you factor in that lots of people get no physical activity at all. So not only are their calorie needs lower, but they have little lean mass to utilize the calories they are eating. Also, I'll assume you're hitting your macros. Many people get little protein and fiber in their daily diets. Couple that with sugar added to everything and you've got a recipe for chronic low satiety. They're hungry all day because they burn through those refined carbs so fast.

I have spent years adapting to a high goyslop intake. If I eat a small healthy meal I feel worse than if I had eaten 6 McDoubles which was a common meal for me in college.
Eating 4 eggs cooked with butter, bacon, sausage, toast, pan fried potatoes automatically gets you to like 900 on your first meal even without a sugary drink.
