Just like when you build a house, you do not start to decorate it immediately. No, you build the foundation. Every man should focus on functional strength, and getting stronger than his peers. No, this doesn’t mean you should be a fat bloated mess, but you should focus on athletic strength.

Basically I've noticed women's eyes light up when you do cool gym shit. Calisthenics that only a few people can do, heavy deadlifts. High jumps even
All this bullshit like no one cares isn't true.
They just don't like it if you care, gotta pretend like it's only natural that you can do it.
It's fricked and stupid and obviously if you're secure and can radiate confidence it's better but having an edge can help

At the end of the day a good portion of happiness comes from genuine interest and people wanting to frick you or be your friend

and how is starting off strong better than just doing progressive overload with high reps?

You can easily reach 1/2/3/4 in your first year just doing hypertrophy stuff

people who say shit like this are moronic. an untrained individual who has been sedentary for the past 20 years isn't going to get to 1/2/3/4 for reps in a year unless going insanely hard or roiding.

It literally doesn't matter if you start with hypertrophy focused program since your lifting career should last life time in some degree. As long as you increase weights progressively and have at least
    >squat variation
    >hip hinge variation
    >horizontal push variation
    >horitontal pull variation
    >vertical push variation
    >vertical pull variation
in routine it doesn't matter if you can bench 2pl8 or not in long run.

      Anonymous

Absolutely embarrassing if you can’t bench 2pl8 after a couple of years in the gym. You guys never compare lifts with friends?

        Anonymous

Most people here don’t have friends so they can’t envision the embarrassment
        >wow you are jacked, you must bench a lot huh? I just began lifting a couple months ago and I am almost at 2pl8
        >well done bro, I am working my way up to 2pl8
        >wait, how long have you been lifting?
        >close to a decade
        >*dies of cringe*
        >female nearby instantly loses respect for you and no longer sees you as a viable male that will provide her strong offspring

damn, i had a similar experience, everyone should value functional strength while remaining athletic looking

            >bench press
            >functional strength
Your number on the bench press are useless in virtually every functional physical persuit. Any combat sport, strongman, etc, can be entierly satisfied with being able to do 20 pushups. If you want "functional strength" focus on OHP, squats, deadlifts and so on.

              Anonymous

This, I have no idea why benching is the marker for upper body pushing strength when everytime you push anything you're doing OHP or incline as you naturally lean forward.

Here's the issue with that. You'll say this and the logical interpretation is to start with strength, and only after you've done it for some time, you may switch to hypertrophy. You should really slowly incorporate hypertrophy early on. It uses different recovery bandwidth than strength training. You can implement some hypertrophy in your strength training and it will be complementary, not hindering.

So yes you should start with strength, but you should really ease into hypertrophy over the course of the novice stage.

No difference anyways, the only way to get stronger without getting bigger is through leverages or neural efficiency, ie mind muscle connection. Activating the mooskles properly and at a high intensity takes practice, it's why you struggle doing basic things with your non-dominant arm. I hypothesize there's really nothing special about doing reps in the "strength" range besides the fact it forces you to go high intensity, which you can do at a higher rep range if you are intentional with your reps and use full effort.
