It's more of the overall system now. Punishes merit, rewards mediocrity, highly regulatory, refuses to fail the deserving. what you should trust is incentive structures. Your doctor and your pharmacist and everything else around the "the people selling medications" will reliably blow smoke up your ass. They are strongly disincentivized from telling you about any problems with their product. This is as easy as thinking it through yourself, at every stage. Does a pharmacist want to argue with a fatty about whether magnets are a safer alternative to statins for reducing blood cholesterol? Even one encounter like that results in a lifetime of avoidance of it.
Supplement sellers and diet writers are no less self-interested, and are much less educated, but the incentive structure is actually somewhat healthy there.
