They make sense if you run or bike a lot. Otherwise they're pretty unnecessary.

They are 10/10 for running and othet cardio. YMMV depending on the make/model watch you buy. I have a garmin instinct and it is a solid tool on top of being good for tracking runs.

All smart watches are fricking gay. Imagine needing a computer literally connected to you. put the phone down, take a break.

I'd like to know how they work.
Is it some shit that measures your pulse with electro magnets and the iron in your blood?
Or is it a literal physical sensor.
    If that. How?

Not worth it. Buy a $10 casio for when you run or train in intervals.

I have had a couple Garmins, started with the cheapest one slowly worked up to the top of the line. They're great for overall health tracking, sleep, steps, resting HR, VO2, etc

I'm not them but I did the same thing. For me it was based on active battery life and being able to track different activities.

I could not do more than about eight hours of time in GPS mode in previous models and once I got into ultra running and Ironman I needed a better battery.

It's shit in terms of what you'd buy a fitness watch for, but it's fun to do while doing cardio

Have a garmin watch. Use it for resttime between sets, tracks puls, steps, and general kcal burned(not accurate but good to compare other days with) I also use it when i golf for distances. It's great

    These are fricking useless.
None of them can measure your heart rate or sleep accurately, and most of them can't even measure steps too. There's a channel called The Quantified Scientist who measures them. If you actually want to measure your heart rate get a polar h10.

You have to charge them everyday. Most of them look like toys. Your phone can do all of the things that a smartwatch can and chances are you're already carrying it 99% of the time.

A normal watch is a classic look and you don't need to charge it everyday. Personally, the only function I need in a watch is a stopwatch. Also you can measure your heart rate with it, just count the beats for 15 seconds and multiply by 4.

      >Also you can measure your heart rate with it, just count the beats for 15 seconds and multiply by 4.
Yeah just do math in the middle of a run

You can do it after a run. Also, measuring your heart rate in the middle of a run is not really important.

I don't really care about accuracy and most normies don't either. I got the GW5 Pro and it actually has a battery that isn't dogshit, usually just need to charge it once a week.

Completely worthless for lifting. Pretty fricking nice for cardio.

My Galaxy Watch is really nice for runs, I can download podcasts to it and connect my earbuds so I don't have to have a phone on me. People who are really into fitness tracking like Vo2 and shit will probably want a garmin though.

Good for mountain climbing/diving/running/biking but completely unnecessary for an indoor gym. Also if such a watch costs less than $500 it's trash.

You don't know what you're talking about. I got a Garmin Instinct on Amazon for like 200 bucks. Thing is great, and is way more accurate and usable than the expensive Galaxy Watch I used previously, at less than half the price. Also, the battery lasts a month.

ive been running a lot lately, and the amount of data you get is pretty amazing. i wouldnt splurge on a $300+ watch. i bought a $130 huawei chinese spyware watch instead and it's pretty amazing. looks fashionable too.

I don't get the fitness smartwatch concept. I like to run, and I look at people posting their runs in the running thread and it just looks like junk data. People get their nuts in a twist if their pace isn't consistent through their run, or is a bit off from the day before? Doesn't make sense to me, somedays you're a kenyan, somedays you're a mom jogger, that's just the way shit works. Push hard if you're feeling it, ease up if not, but get your miles in and you'll do fine.
Basically I use a Casio 5600 for everything. That's all you need.

Cause they need an excuse to train. Like making it out to be a game viewing their data trying to beat their high score.

I was gifted a Fenix 7x solar for Christmas. It has a built in torch which is the most useful feature. I do like the sleep tracking and I use the activity tracking at work as an adventure guide.
All in all I wouldn't buy one over a protrek but it was a fine gift.

I have a slightly older Polar watch that I use with an H7 chest band. Bit of a faff but the only way to get any kind of HR accuracy. LEDs on the back of a watch case are not as accurate eg fat bastard with blood vessels hidden by lard etc. (Just observed my very slender missus fail to register on a OxiPro as she has awful circulation in her fingers and arms).

Will get a Pacer Pro at some point for a treat (don't generally waste money on frippery). I only use HRM, sleep monitoring and cadence, but I might use running power.

Only people with chronic 'tardation need them to count their steps.

I've had a 245m since august 2020, I use it for running, lifting and walks. I like having the ability of seeing my cadence, vertical oscillation and heart rate as well as the obvious like pace and distance.
I don't use the music feature despite paying extra for it and have also used it for swimming in the ocean.

I have an older FitBit, I like being able to track only my sleep and steps. If I feel sick, I can just check and see if I slept less than six hours and rest a bit.
