    1. Eat in a caloric surplus. You need to gain muscle, and that will inevitably come with some fat but you can cut the fat later. About 0.5% to 0.75% bodyweight increase per week is recommended. Weigh yourself daily to account for variations in hydration, etc. and use the averages.
    2. Heavy compound lifts. Squat, bench, deadlift, pullups, bent-over rows, overhead press, etc. Lots of muscles involved, easy to program.
    3. High volume. If you're trying to gain muscle, volume is king (weight * sets * reps). Ease into it but you should be increasing your volume pretty steadily.
    4. Use an actual program. Lots of people recommend Starting Strength, personally I used 5-3-1 Boring but Big for my first few months and gained a fair bit of muscle.
