doesn't green tea have caffeine? how is that different than drinking coffee then

You can get non caffeinated brands

Honestly any tea that isn’t caffeine dominated helps, aside from herbal benefits the hot water helps wake you up in the morning

The ammount of caffeine in green tea compared to coffee is .... laughably low

So yes. The difference is huge

Your caffeine withdrawal will go away eventually.

If you are addicted to caffeine, you will have more energy while sober.

what's a good time frame for a withdrawal? I've been drinking it daily for almost 20 years

There is a plant called Lupinus that's supposed to be a caffeine-less alternative to coffee with a somewhat similar taste. Haven't tried it, though.

      interesting, I'll look it up

Used to drink it every day couple years back then I just kinda forgot to drink it when I changed job with no coffe automata.
Just a few days and irritability goes away then it's all psychological like sucking on a comfortable pacifier, I was just too distracted to have the psychological part.
Now I drink a cup of coffe once in a while and everytime the caffine high feels so amazing every time since I don't build up my tolerance.
Being addicted sucks, the enjoyment of the high is nothing in comparison.
You should quit the addiction and reward yourself with it once in a while instead.

Yea I want to experience this

I quit coffee when I had a bad cold. I was already suffering I figured. And when the cold was gone, so was the withdrawal issues. I did ultimately go back to caffeine - but now only black or green tea. And if I skip a day of caffeine from black or green tea, I don't suffer at all.

Not really. That energy is gone forever.
      t. has gone months without drinking tea before, gave it up because I like the taste too much and it didn't improve my sleep.

How long did that take? I went without caffeine for 3 weeks a while back, and though I had more consistent energy levels, I still didn’t get a real “buzz” when I had my first cup of coffee after those 3 weeks.

    what's wrong with coffee/caffeine?
    >t. never drank coffee until i started working weird hours last month
i use it to help my sleep pattern stay consistent. just a cup of black before work.

If you've only been having a mild amount for a month it's no big deal but long term usage of it at higher doses, like any drug really, can cause problems

For me, my teeth are kind of stained, I have zero energy when I wake up, I have no appetite until the afternoon, I don't like being dependent on any substance it feels like a weakness (it is)

Only if you offload your ability to feel okay to a substance (*and eat poorly, and don't exercise, and lose your curiosity, and consume state propagandies). I'm 39 and feel better than I did in college.

i really dont get how some of you get addicted to coffee.
i've been drinking black coffee for years, 1-2 cups a day, but i had tons of moments where i just stopped drinking it for several months, and i never experienced any withdrawals apart from a very mild headache for a day or two. maybe the difference is that i never drink coffee in the morning, my first cup is always around afternoon for a quick endorphin boost.

I think there is a spectrum of caffeine tolerance and dependence. I could take caffeine pills before bed and I'd sleep deeply for eight hours, whereas an old roommate seemed like he *might* kill me prior to having a cup of coffee, at which point the morningly demon would vacate his body. I'm like you, where drinking coffee serves no function but tastes good, but look at the panic in some people when you tell them to imagine not having it. They're fully dependent on it.

OP here, when I quit I didn't really feel any changes. My sleep is the same, energy levels are the same, etc. It's just that I'm irritable when I wake up and I attribute that to not having coffee but in reality idk. maybe it's just withdrawals maybe not. Honestly I just want to be able to drink coffee and actually FEEL the effects, and not just for the taste which I love.

There's a moment in a JRE episode that a coffee drinker who experimented with quitting addressed this:

        ?t=526
I always wonder if looking at it this way - stopping withdrawal symptoms from a drug - inspired many people to quit coffee.

kek I've watched this before and it's one of the reasons I quit coffee

Pollan’s book on plant based drugs, “This is Your Mind on Plants” has an interesting, long chapter on caffeine. It was watching this JRE episode and reading the book that made me go off caffeine for a bit to see what would happen, but then of course I started drinking coffee again.

Does a person actually need caffeine? Technically no, but you can only remove so many enjoyable elements from your life before things start feeling pretty bland. Personally, I’ve found it much easier to give up alcohol than caffeine.

            what was your experience?

Started feeling normal in the morning without coffee. You get a sort of “hangover” effect from being in caffeine withdrawal, which is most prevalent in the morning since you’ve gone 12+ hours without it. Once you quit caffeine this sluggishness goes away. Also found my energy levels to be more consistent throughout the day; no real mid-afternoon slump. My sleep also improved. Also experienced less bad hangovers when drinking alcohol while off caffeine. (As a quick aside, I’ve found quitting alcohol to be more useful in improving sleep than quitting caffeine. I currently drink coffee but no alcohol and sleep like a baby.)

I may eventually go off caffeine again but I can’t see myself doing it forever. I feel the way about coffee that Pollan says his wife does, which is that it’s my “little cup of optimism.” Not much beats getting a good buzz and listening to some music. Unfortunately, the effect seems to wane a bit as you use it more. A big part of my motivation for hopping off caffeine was to regain some of my caffeine intolerance and get a stronger effect when I returned to it.

I sometimes drink a lot of coffee but most days it's only like 3 large cups. I'm not really sure if it's even worth the withdrawals or if there are any benefits for me if I quit.

I boil chopped ginger, then add half a lemon and a shake of cayenne as a refreshment. But I'm also sipping one 30mg vyvance capsule as needed after mixing it into in a heavily watered down splash of juice. It curbs appetite and wakes you up quicker than coffee.
