Gladiator Diet

How healthy were they if all they ate was barley, wheat and beans?

Schizo's on here talk about how wheat and gluten fucks up the gut biome but I feel like it didn't bother them very much.

i don't think they should be looked to as some indication or ideal for fitness. they were often slaves and criminals who simply fought to the death for the entertainment of the masses. the more cruel emperors through cripples, retards, and the elderly in the mix also.

I don't know man. This board preached the squats and oats meme for the longest time and it made sense because oats are dense it energy and squats make you physically stronger.

If you added some cheese or yogurt with the oats and just subsisted off of that you'd probably go far. Sometimes shit is so retarded that is just works, like prisoners and what they eat. They eat shit like cornbread, beans, rice and occasionally meat. However, they spend a huge amount of time exercising which forces the body to utilize what it's got and work forward regardless. That to me seems very based, making nothing out of something.

      >slaves or criminals
Depended on the era. Pax Romana had many who were known as sportsmen. Also they very rarely died at that time.

They were known as having a builtfat look and they weren't eating to be healthy. They were eating to get huge and to have a layer of fat so that way their cuts stayed more surface level instead of cutting to the flesh

Despite what vegans and carnischizos will tell you, the human body can tolerate a very wide range of diet. You can be eat whatever you want and as long as you get enough complete protein and fats, you can build muscle.

they were known to be on the flabbier side as another anon said. despite that they were still probably eating healthier than a lot of people do nowadays, and were definitely getting a fuck ton more exercise, so imagine they'd be considered pretty healthy by todays standards

whats happening in this painting? are they booing him for sparing him?

He's looking to see if the crowd wants him to spare his opponent or not, and by showing the thumbsies downies the crowd is saying they want to see him kill him

iirc the victor of a fight often looked to the crowd when they'd defeated an opponent to get an idea of whether the crowd wanted him to kill or spare them. the popular myth is that thumbs up meant spare and thumbs down meant kill, so in this painting most likely the artist is trying to portray the crowd telling the victor to kill the defeated opponent. i think more accurately the jury is out on whether it was a thumbs up or thumbs down that meant 'kill' or whether just showing thumbs at all was the signal for it

wow thats crazy, so glad we've moved on from such barbaric practices haha

it is crazy. i mean the whole classical period is really interesting but really brutal. if you think gladiatorial fights were the worst of it you should look into the origins of the servile (slave) wars. basically due to some wars causing an influx of conquered slaves, it became cheaper for plantation owners in southern Italy and Sicily to just work slaves to death quickly and then immediately buy new replacements than to keep individual slaves for many years

        >thumbs down death
Historians are unsure what the "hostile thumb" looked like, but it was more clear than the gesture for mercy, so it's thought thumbs up was likely the sign of death, as it's much easier to see from a distance than a thumbs down.

I have no idea why I'm being so autistic on IST rn. But I started cutting last week and am down 2 pounds already with only diet changes.

probably sidewards to signify a body being downed. I imagine they kept doing such gesture, up then down making the arena a fire and the defeated dead meat. thumbs up is just the body still stands and there is no gesture, meaning more peaceful psique of the arena etc etc. if you are fit make a thumbs down and feel your wrists almost crack. its not feasible who had the idea of thumbs down was a hopeless dyel, or a woman.

They were fed barley and beans. First it was cheap af, second it would make them higher bf%, so they could get more small cuts in fights, making it a better show.
