I don't know where or when you're referring to but 50+ years ago in the US, many young people and families were in cities or suburbs. Almost none did manual labor and being fat or having a fat ass was pariah tier. They maybe worked in a factory but offices and shit were becoming more common. They ate a lil bowl of oatmeal with butter for breakfast, soup or a sandwich for lunch, some beef and veggies for dinner typically. They walked everywhere and used minimal public transport, my grandfather and his family used to tell me how they walked to church, to work to the park, to bars and often to restaurants or maybe drive if they wanted. They weren't enslaved to the car and they sure as frick weren't doing as much physical labor unless for recreation.
