If you train MMA and you get into a fight, you can decide whether to take the fight to the ground; you'll know how to defend takedowns so if you fight a drunk former wrestler, or, more likely, your opponent falls on you and tries to drag you down, you'll be more likely to stay on your feet, if you want the fight to take place there. If you don't know how to sprawl ("live" not just in practice) then you just have to hope the other guy doesn't try to drop/drag you to the floor. Also whenever you see videos of actual MMA fighters in bar fights they ALWAYS ground and pound. I don't really see how it's more dangerous to be punching someone's friend from mount compared to standing up, if his friends are the type to jump in then they can do that whether you're standing up or not. Just don't play submissions and they won't think you're killing their friend (even though strikes are more dangerous). The kind of person that will boot you in the head when you take their friend down might also break a bottle over your head when you knock their friend out. Best move is not to play.
Absolutely MMA; a good MMA fighter can outbox any random butthole on the street, can toss knees reliably, can deal if someone tries to drag him onto the floor or he falls, can restrain someone without hospitalizing them for TBI if he needs to. It's not like no MMA fighter can punch, and practicing in MMA gloves gives you a bit of a better idea of what it looks like to parry bare hands than 16oz might.

MMA is the superior sport to compete in in my biased opinion it's deeper and wrestling is fun. Boxing is incredible though, huge respect for development of such a focused skillset, I could only box and not kickbox for about half this year and I came back to MMA with such smoother hands.

I don't really see how it's more dangerous to be punching someone's friend from mount compared to standing up, if his friends are the type to jump in then they can do that whether you're standing up or not.
