how did powerlifting shit get so popular?

how did powerlifting shit get so popular?
seems like every gym guy nowadays does squats and deadlifts and they wait like 3 minutes inbetween sets.
what's the point of waiting so long?

I wait 2 minutes for my 5x5 strength stuff like ohp, bench, squat, deadlift and one minute for my 4x8 size building stuff like flies, lunges, rows, shrugs. Helped get me strong and big simultaneously.

      Anonymous

there is zero percent chance you are actually lifting 5x5 within a few reps of failure each set if you are resting 2 minutes

idk they're simple, fun, hit a lot of muscles, and guys like to compare them
on the other hand olympic lifts are more complicated

  9. 6 months ago
    Anonymous

Dunno. I don't like wasting time so I do antagonist supersets and a full body routine every day I work out. Try to hit failure n all that. AFAIK waiting 3 minutes between sets is to fully clear lactic acid to reset muscles to baseline for maximum performance; powerlifters tend to dodge cardio. They train for maximal strength rather than endurance or power, so their lactic acid threshold and reset time tend to be utter shit.

      Anonymous

      >AFAIK waiting 3 minutes between sets is to fully
Restore ATP. There are also other pathways, that require more time, but 3 minutes is for (almost, since it's logarítmical) full ATP restoration

      Anonymous

To recover sufficiently that the next set will be full of effective reps and not trash. Under fatigue, muscular recruitment drops dramatically. No recruitment = no mechanical tension = no gains

Supersetting is a waste of time, most of the fatigue that resting is helping is systemic and not localised (after a set of curls, very little of the total fatigue is bicep related, so if you go do something else you are not actually recovering). It's nothing to do with lactic acid, lifting is well into anaerobic territory (ATP as a fuel source). Don't talk about what you don't know

2pl8 for whatever amount of reps might be maximal for the person taking longer rest times, and if his goal for the workout is to hit 2pl8 for whatever amount of reps sets across, he will do good to rest however long he needs to achieve that.

      >That said if I notice someone is waiting for the equipment I'm on I'll speed it up
For me it depends on the exercise. When i'm doing bench they can work in if they want, but ideally i'll just take my rest time as normal. If i have the hex-bar, i don't care if someone wants it, it's mine. Only ever saw one girl using it though.

That powerlifting crap is lame as frick honestly. If you want to gain muscle mass, hypertrophy is what you want to do anyway. Give me 4x12 reps and 20-24 sets sessions to failure any day of the week like the old school bodybuilders did vs squatting 5 reps waiting 3 minutes between each set and having the legs of a 10 year old kid because you are trying to stay lean, or getting fat as frick because you want to be world's strongest man or some shit like that.

Been doing hypertrophy for years with the annual bulk/cut routine and haven't looked back. Just throw a few sets of 5-6 reps for a few weeks when you plateau to build some strength and then go back to hypertrophy.

I'd rather do 10 reps of slow, controlled 225lbs deaflifts and get an insane back pump vs a few reps of 400lbs with a rounded back, dropping the fricking bar each time and then popping off as if I was the second coming of christ like all the powerlifting gays do on tik tok.

      moron Black person
pl is not for people who want to be as big as possible, I can not believe this needs to be explained to someone who claims to have been lifting for several years
You even admit yourself that you get stronger by not doing hypertrophy work, you absolute troglodyte

It's fun to see numbers go up on lifts. Also it's attractive to some of the general public because you can be fat and progress (despite most competing powershitters actually cutting hard to make a lower weight class)

A lot of single prostitutes out there
But i notice prostitutes date/marry soft looking men that are easy to manupilate, cheat on or guys with weird personalities (cucks, crazys, psychos). They never marry a handsome guy with morals

    >and they wait like 3 minutes inbetween sets.
    >what's the point of waiting so long?

Strength training is anaerobic, you dyel. If you aren't resting, you aren't making gains.

I thought 3 mins was the standard for hypertrophy? I wait 3 mins for most of my lifts. Should I lower the rest time?

Me and some army guy at my gym are the only ones I ever see doing that shit
most people come to the gym(dyel to beginner tier), then the personal trainer just has them do shit machines at 30% intensity for 60 minutes
Seriously - why are PTs like this
    >ib4 they know what theyre doing
yes having a 40yo office worker guy do 60 reps of effortless lat pulldowns is genius

Because lifting really heavy weights is fun?
Not even a powershitter myself, but when I step into the gym, I want to pound out reps with as heavy as I can go. You feel like a top dog when you beat your previous PR and it just motivates you that much more to keep coming back for more.
It's all about consistency and discipline. If you aren't having fun with your workouts, chances are you aren't going to put 100% of your effort into it and eventually give up on it.

Yeah, I should just start cranking them all out in one set. Thanks for the time saving tip, Anon

Powerlifting got popular because strength training advocates promoted heavy compound lifts as the holy grail to literally everyone from bodybuilders to runners. Nobody online knew better.

Im natty and squat 270 for reps. You NEED to rest inbetween sets to let the ATP regen numb nuts.

I rest 5 min between sets for compounds and 3 minutes for isolations. That's how much you need when you're actually training hard and going to true failure

So a minute and a half is too little resting time for compounds?

3-5 mins is ideal, and for truly 1rm days, take allllll of those 5 if you need

I never do 1rms only 4x8 on my compounds and 4x12 on isos

What is your goal with the set, or lifting in general?
Just hypertrophy, and you truly do not give a shit about lifting light weights spammed for volume x infinity? 1-3 mins, dependent on the lift.
Some combination of strength and hypertrophy? If your goal is to hit x weight for y reps, you take however long you need to accomplish that. There are no downsides outside of wasted time, outside of 10+ where you just start to become cold and undialed.
If you want to do cardio then do it separately, although you can get a cardio effect by super/giant setting a bunch of shit. Total rest time still comes out to 2-3 minutes, you are just taking advantage of antagonistic muscle groups.

        As I said here

I never do 1rms only 4x8 on my compounds and 4x12 on isos

mostly hypertrophy I'm not really chasing big numbers. I only do 4 exercises per day and I had a short rest time so I could be done in ~45min but I just added 2 more exercises per day but I'm not really trying to spend over an hour lifting. Keeping my routine simple helps keep me consistent which is most important to me. I try to go to just before failure and I've been increasing the weights pretty consistently so far, I've been lifting on and off for like 12 years now and just got back on it like 4 months ago after taking a few months off

        >I never do 1rms only 4x8 on my compounds
missin out on serious strength gains m8 ( which also help bodybuilding)

Na man i never found it worth it risking injury plus I don't really care that much about strength gains anymore
