Book 1, the actual Dune, is ironically the least interesting of the series in my opinion. Things really take of with Messiah, the second book, and it gets better and better, culminating with God Emperor, which concludes a cycle. The last two books are not as great as these 4 first, but they let you see what results of the whole Arrakis debacle. Definitely the best SF written so far.
Even the additions to the series by the son are definitely worth the time.

I think the issue is with comparing it to Dune. Herbert's writing is much more engaging.
