how do i get better and more defined abs?

no matter how much weight i lose I still have a layer of bellyfat. are crunches actually beneficial?

i don't squat so I was thinking about doing something with my pullup bar like leg and knee raises, is that superior to crunches?

i don't wanna roid until im like 40 but then again I never really focused on training abs. I did train it for like a month tho and did see some decent results, core become way stronger and had a tight feeling compared to now

Leg raises will help. So do things like an ab wheel, weighted sit ups, Russian twists (for that oblique separation) etc. Crunches have been a meme for a long ass time and for some reason won't die. They're a waste of your time

In general, the trick is to focus on compound lifts like squats and deadlifts that engage the abs. Don't worry about doing ab specific exercises, they're only useful if you have extremely weak abdominals. Also focus on eating in a 500 calorie deficit by using a calorie counter app and weighing all your food out. In a couple of months, you'll lose the fat and get more defined abs. For you though? i suggest building some muscle first. Stick to a high protein diet while eating at maintenance levels, lift heavy on the BDS compound lifts, and stick to not having abs for a couple months until you put on some good muscle. Having abs means absolutely nothing if you look like a chewed up pencil stick. It's like big breasts on a fat chick.

thanks man. I work out at home but have been considering getting a gym membership lately to be able to squat and deadlift mainly

      >how do i get better and more defined abs
      >no matter how much weight i lose I still have a layer of bellyfat
Sir, you're still quite fat. the only answer is continue losing fat. you can do direct ab work in the meantime, thickening the rectus abdominis will help you have abs at a higher bf%.

yeah you are right although I might seem more fat than usual since the cops confiscated my bike a month ago so I don't get much cardio in combined with 0 ab work in the past few months

Uhh squats and deads are good and all but abs are like any other muscle and if you want to make actual progress isometric contractions aren't exactly efficient for making the abs grow. Target your abs.

It's just genetics. I walked the Camino de Santiago and came home skinnier than a gulag prisoner, and still had bellyfat covering the would-be abs. In pic related I'm like 11-12% bodyfat and still nothing. Just gotta embrace it my dude

it's not genetics. skinny does not equal lean. simply put, still too fat exacerbated by not having a sufficient amount of mass.

You have very low muscle mass and are likely slightly higher in bodyfat than you think.

      >like 11-12% bodyfat
Have you considered that the problem is in you pulling numbers out of your ass?

This. I legitimately do not understand why OP and this guy insist on being low enough bodyfat to have abs. I just don't get it, what the frick is wrong with these people? CLEARLY this guy is not 11-12% bodyfat and even if we entertain the idea and play a little game and say he is, then what? Now you got your magical number of 11-12% bodyat, what are you gonna do now? If you are still not lean enough, then answer is to cut more. It doesn't matter what imaginary number we come up with, the answer is always the same.

Yes news flash: you will weigh the same amount as you did in elementary school if you want to have six pack abs. Neither one of you have some magical condition that is preventing you from getting abs lol. But no you must stick onto your imaginary bodyfat number and blame genetics. I swear to god I'm gonna go fricking nuts one of these days. Fricking sick and tired of educating these morons here.

I am going to tell you the only important thing about abs - deadlifts and squats and overhead press do not build abs unless you are genetically gifted. You need to do core isolations and get to low bodyfat. You are clearly high bodyfat
