Split squats shouldn't hurt your back at all. Also, try leg circles. 10 reps each direction each side. It's a 1980s mom exercise but your but gon feel it.
Learn how to brace properly and fix your form, soreness doesn't matter as long as you do squats and deadlifts and eat enough.
