>How do I learn to swim as a 22 year old black male?
For whatever reason my parents put my sister in lessons but not me. I’m pretty athletic, however I’ve picked up many injuries from playing sports so I think swimming is probably the best form of cardio for me to preserve my mobility as I age. The issue, like I said is I’ve got no clue how and I’m scared of embarrassing myself and confirming every stereotype when I show up to the pool

Just pay for swimming classes. I also can't swim, probably because I live in Arizona and don't need to. Also don't worry about embarrassing yourself, better to try then to not try at all.

If you take a big breath and lie on your back (pic related), it’s impossible to sink. Then all you have to do is kick your legs and you’ll start moving ( see this link: https://youtu.be/m7-shp5wkao). Once you have the confidence that you can avoid drowning the water becomes a lot less scary & you can practice other forms of swimming. Don’t worry about what other people think, they’re not going to be paying attention to you

Like others have said, just pay for lessons and don't worry about people laughing at you. The only weakness is refusing to improve, and the opinions of crabs mean less than nothing.

That's not really true. Whenever I try to float on my back, my legs sink and pull the rest of me down. Luckily treading water is piss easy, I'm White, not Black, and I played water polo for years so I know the eggbeater kick. So drowning isn't really a concern.

Black people are negatively boyent. They can't float on their backs. That's why they struggle to swim, they're always sinking.

They tend to have denser bones than the other races. In my case, I can swim, but can’t float/tread water. As soon as I stop swimming, I sink immediately.

To add to this, I guess the exception would be salinated water. I can tread that. But fresh water is an absolute no go

I think it's not really that they have denser bones and more that they have shorter thoraxes and limbs. Thorax is a lot more buoyant than the limbs.
Also OP from my experience the most important thing for an adult learning to swim is to be comfortable underwater. I would try staying underwater for longer periods of time underwater (try this in a chest high pool obviously), try opening your eyes underwater as well. Maybe even start trying to swim underwater before you try swimming at the surface. That way you wont panic when your nose, mouth and face go underwater while swimming and you wont be as tense while learning. Currently teaching a freind how to swim and the number 1 thing is getting rid of fear so you can actually focus on technique without constantly getting distracted by a fear of drowning.

I am a white dude with a long torso but I too have negative buoyancy, my dad and brothers have the same problem. We have dense bone structure and sink like stones. I can swim, but treading water is like doing HIT training to stay afloat. The only time I was ever able to enjoy swimming like a normal person is when I got fat as frick for a couple years. I was blown away at how easy it was to float like everyone else...

Sign up for swimming lessons at a pool. Don't go somewhere yourself and try to float, every year there are blacks who die trying to do this.

I think swimming lessons are probably the best bet, or you can ask one of your friends who knows how to swim to teach you. I don't think you should worry about embarrassing yourself when you're trying to learn a new skill, plus the time it takes to learn how to swim is pretty short, so you'll be swimming well within a month or two tops.

Have someone who knows how to swim go to the pool with you and show you the ropes. It’s extremely easy for adults to learn how to swim and can be done in a single afternoon. People of African descent tend to have greater bone density than most other races hence why most blacks aren’t good swimmers

I believe because they are closer to apes than other types of people. Apes also have a hard time swimming. People getting attacked by chimps can use water to escape because chimps panic and drown

yeah i genuinely think they just panic and make weird movements and push their own head down. probably some innate fear of water, rather than lack of capacity to actually swim.

Just do the things you want to do and be open to criticism unless it's an unprovoked attack without useful information.

Google adult swimming lessons and on the first day just yell 'black man can't swim' before you cannonball into the safe end of the pool.

My GF is black and can’t swim (sorry bro, another one claimed by BWC). I intend to teach her when we have the time.
What I would do if I were you is either suck it up and be embarrassed because at the end of the day you’re making yourself better and fixing a flaw you have identified. That’s not embarrassing when you look at that bigger picture, and it would only take you a few lessons to be able to swim.

If you do it by yourself, go with friends who CAN swim and you trust just in case you frick up and need them to help/get help, stay shallow where you can stand and practice floating. First you learn to float face up so if you cannot swim when you’re deeper all you have to do is remember to float.

Then you use a pool noodle, keep it under your chest or back while you practice basic strokes. Backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly (hard to do with the noodle tbqh), but freestyle is probably what you wanna focus most on at first. Use YouTube for the forms. Get some goggles so the chlorine doesn’t frick your eyes, be conscious of the edge so you don’t slam your head into the wall and KO yourself.

PRO TIP: Don’t be a fricking moron. If you frick up dont flail and lose your shit like a moron. That makes it worse, all you have to do is chill and float. Inb4 muh black people sink stfu pussy. You people freak out, often for no reason, and this is why you drown all to put on a dramatic show. I grew up swimming competitively and went on a field trip to some pool or water park or some shit, in the shallow end had some random black kid lose his shit and put me in a head lock just to start drowning both of us literally dug his nignails into my forehead with his other hand. I got drowned worse than him, had to use every fiber in me last second to punch/push him off of me and then tell him to just fricking stand up. School staff starts coddling him while I was the one coughing my lungs out and puking water everywhere. Don’t be like that.

I have over a +3.0 on my bone density and I don’t sink. Black people freak out and don’t even attempt to float. Not far above our posts about bone density scores there is a white anon claiming he has negative bouyancy due to his torso being too long. This is on you for drawing such assumptions and then getting emotional about it. I originally was assuming you’d respond agreeing with me and say something like “yeah lmao same shit I float just fine” but now that you’re crying about “gaslights” you sound like an actual hoe. You took it as a personal attack and chose to be affected negatively by it, immediately puking ad hominem. What you need to learn is to float, swimming comes naturally and easily after. Just go into water up to your shoulders, and then try positioning yourself into a position where you don't reach the bottom, and try to make yourself afloat. Once that clicks, everything else will come naturally.
The earlier you will learn to revel in embarrassment, the sooner you will start to live your true life. Strange how the younger the person is, the more they are afraid of showing your imperfections, while we all know you're good for nothing, because that's just how it is in life, you learn how to be someone eventually.
Look at teenagers, they are deathly afraid of being embarrassed, that's a kid's thing, really doesn't let you enjoy life.
Failure is an integral part of success. People will laugh, you will then know which people aren't worth your time. Of course there are friends who laugh for friendly reasons, but you get the point.
Anyway, go swim and enjoy being embarrassed lil nug
