When my childhood dog died I was crushed. I refused to cry during her last moments, because I couldn't think of a worse hell for her then to be dying and see me crying and not be able to come up to me.
Afterwards I bawled like a child.
But when I think of her its never of her later years. It is always of us out hunting and walking, some of the silly shit we did together.
Lifting won't keep her here, but it might help keep you going.

Frick, OP. I know the feel. Be strong for your friend and don't delay when the time comes. My one and only regret in life is that I didn't put down my dog earlier when it was clear he wasn't going to get better. My parents didn't want to and I didn't press the issue more — it just prolonged the poor guy's suffering.

It was very hard for me because I still saw my dog as a puppy. The pain never goes away but with time it becomes less and manageable.

Yeah I had to pull the plug on my mom due to complications with cancer when I visited her on Mother’s Day. Absolutely devastated me. Losing my dogs still hurt though. Got one more who’s on her way out and she’s the best dog I ever owned. Going to be absolutely crushed even though I’ve known she’s on her way out for a year now.
