I got sucker punched at a party on Friday and got a massive black eye. It’s bad enough that I figured I should go see a doctor for it who did X-rays and didn’t see any fractures. He did, however, tell me to keep exercise to a bare minimum for next 3 weeks as my eye healed. If there’s nothing wrong, why should I limit the amount I work out? Is ignoring this advice a really bad idea?

If you went to the doctor for every minor pain you felt they'd tell you to take it easy and rest every couple of weeks that you went and you'd always be resting. Try working out and if it feels bad for the eye take it easy, if not keep going.

literally *the* definitive blanket statement from a doctor. the reason they say this is to cover their backs in case you hurt yourself further and blame him like a moron. take some personal responsibility, train light and assess how you're feeling. personally, I would only think twice about bracing hard since the pressure in your head can affect your eye area

Doctor is ok, because no one is claiming not exercising for 3 weeks is going to make your eye explode.

Doctor doesn't have to worry about 3 weeks of gains. So no matter the evidence the doctor is always going to cover his ass. Now, that doesn't mean it must be fine to exercise. But think about what might happen, like blood vessels bursting in your eye and be reasonable.
Personally I'd avoid heavy squats and deadlifts and bench and super heavy sprints. But I'd still do dumbbells and cable pulls for 10-15 reps and brisk but not ridiculous cardio
Just work out but go easy if you have to.
If it wasn't bad enough to make you blind in one eye from the bruising then you are probably good to workout, you should have also beaten the shit out of him, or at the very least made his life shitty by pressing charges.
You could pop a blood vessel and do some weird shit if you try to dl 1000 pounds.
I'd just keep your exertion to 80%. Don't do sprints, don't do any weights that are crazy large for you and be really cautious for the next 3 days.

Traumatic injuries like a well-placed facepunch can increase the likelihood for retinal detachment. Also, while your eye heals you probably have a much higher intraocular pressure which can be exacerbated by temporary blood pressure spikes associates with resistance training. He's right that you should take it easy but 3 weeks is a little much.
