NTA but when I first started out rowing I developed these massive fricking traps, even before lifting. I've never actually been able to have such big traps again since not rowing anymore.

      You know, rowing is crazy
      > calves
      > quads
      > glutes
      > core (back and front)
      > whole lats
      > bicepts
      > shoulders
BUT unless you get some kind of turbo difficulty mode version its mainly a cardio exercise because its so easy to pull the stupid frickin cord back
What I'm saying is: rowing machines as op pictures would be amazingly great if they were more difficult, but as they are they suck ass

Like, seriously: attach a standard pinned weight stack up to 200lbs to that bad boy and now were cookin

^this for men. Rowing machines are amazing training for rowing. They suck for everything else, unless you refuse to lift weights, in which case there would be some benefit to rowing.

same guy, to add to my previous post, your best physique is going to be achieved by lifting weights intensely, then doing uphill treadmill walking at a 120-135 bpm heart rate

I got so good at rowing, my resting pulse was a 38, I won a national championship in high school, then medaled at a national championship in college

had a six pack, but skinny as frick and DYEL doing this, now people think I'm in the military or do cross fit after lifting for a few years

Why not? What should I set it to?

        Anonymous

For most people it's in the 2-4 range. If it's a C2 you can go into options and have it display drag factor. Height and strength will okay a role in this but general guidelines are steady state at 85-95, UT1 at 95-105, 5k effort 105-115, 2k/all out 115-130. The idea is to have a quick and snappy stroke and then a slow and controlled return. Adjusting the drag factor allows you to keep the drive fast over different stroke rates. If you were keeping your drive fast for your steady state at a 130 drag factor your splits would be way too low.

          Anonymous

What does the terminology steady state and UT1 mean?
How fast should my splits be? My 5k is 18 -19 min, so slightly below 2 min power 500m. I've always set the resistance to 10, because it feels the closest to how I learned to row, with heavy wooden oars.

            Anonymous

Steady state is going to be the bulk of your time spent rowing and refers to long steady efforts in the 45-90 minute range. You should do this at 16-19 strokes per minute and at an intensity that you can speak a sentence without losing your breath, but that maintaining a whole conversation would be difficult. This is called the UT2 training zone. UT1 is a little bit more intense, usually about half the length of UT2 pieces. It should be done at an intensity where you can only say a few words before losing your breath, but not so fast they you feel lactic muscle burn, and is usually done in the 19-22 spm range. The upper limit of UT1 is happening when your body is clearing lactic acid at the rate that it is accumulating.

If you're pulling a sub 19 5k on a Concept 2 you're already doing really well. Adjusting your drag factor to closer to what I mentioned before will help you keep proper form and technically transfer better to on the water rowing. At least that's the theory.

              Anonymous

If my UT1 limit is close to 32 -34 one, and my UT2 limit is around 28 ish, is that an indication that I have poor technique? I'm 1,85 tall, if that matters

ive been doing rowing machine for 30 mins 6 days a week for 4 months, only that and ive lost mad weight and made some arm, legs, abs and back gains. ive reached lvl 8/10 of the machine with a pace of 35 strokes per minute. im planning on starting lifting after i reach lvl 10 tho. insane cardio gains, resting heart rate has gone down like 25-30 bpm less (ex smoker and 100% sedentary). i would post the before and after but i dont have time to edit the pics.

You probably won't build a very impressive build depending on how big you want to get
But you will definitely get very well toned, and mog pretty much every powerlard who's at the brink of having a heart attack from merely going upstairs
Rowing is like the best cardio in existence (only swimming competes, but it is outdoor and inconvenient to do everyday), it hits pretty much your entire body, so the cardio gains are doubled
Throw the garbage treadmill away, running is high impact trash, more harm than good than your body in the long run
    Just do more rowing instead

the only people who like treadmills are people who live in bad neighborhoods and can't walk around freely.
instead of moving to a better neighborhood they start going to the gym - specifically for cardio - same reason why spin cycle classes are popular.

I started to do some rowing as variation on my cardio as I don't really do any high intensity. Basically I do either a 2 min or a few 1 min sessions and try to beat my cals burned. My legs are the major issue holding me back. I've been capped at like 42 cals burned in 2 mins for weeks now.
