if i do 9 sets of situps a week (to failure) as natural hypertrophy suggests, how long will it take until my abdominals start popping out?

It might take awhile. Maybe try some exercises for your abdominals?

Inefficiently. Do crunches, planks and hanging leg raises.

alri then it's way too early to add weights, however I'd argue you should add a couple of leg raises here and there just to spice things up, some people claim they don't work your abs but I think it's 100% BS

I've heard it from a lot of people who should have known better, something about them working mostly the hip flexors
