I don't think it's anything that deep, it's just awkward to pass by other people and not greeting them when you are not in a city or in a crowded area
        >oh look the thirst human being I've seen in the last two hours of walking, let me avoid eye contact and pretend that I haven't even noticed him as we pass very close to each other

It's also about old time traditions, if somebody's on the trail, you greet them and see if they're ok, because it could take hours to get help otherwise.
The trail is everybody's home, and you don't break hospitality out there. Like, in the mid 90s there was a serial rapist in the mountains near here, it was considered such a breach that people are still talking about him, even writing books about it! Yet, there have been much worse rapes in the urban areas since then. But on the trail it's just NOT DONE.
Also holy frick, I gotta get away from here, I never noticed how common rapes are.

More like country mentality, you know that high trust ethnostate socialist thing that developed over centuries because frick it even if we all hate one another, Nature itself is an even bigger enemy and nobody likes getting eaten by wolves?
Nowadays we only have the last vestiges of it, a reminder of simpler, harder times, that forced us to be better.
It's a shame, really, that we can't be better if there isn't a common enemy to rally against. Let's hope alien invaders arrive soon, they might just be what we need.

                No, that's not it.
First, why would anyone not be OK on a hike in 2024? How bad is your health that you assume another human can't handle a simple walk in the woods. Most of the hikes you rich people do are laughable in how easy they are.
Second, you don't live in the Old West anymore, where help was a million miles away and you had to rely on each other on the spot, seeing if everyone is ok. Plus people didn't hike for recreation back then the way they do today.
You have an empty life and fill it with do-gooder sympathies that makes you feel like you're some kind of moral superior to everyone around you. You're deluded, have too much money, and aren't self aware.
I come on trail to get away from over socialized urban environments, and you have to respect that. To badger me with your deluded moral posturing is extremely disrespectful. You think you're high level, but that behavior is extremely low level.

I already told you, it's vestigial.
Everyone does it, because we used to do it, just like most pleasantries and small talk.
And, imx, it's not unusual for people to answer back asking for directions or about the status of the trail ahead.
I'd rather have the trail all for myself too, it doesn't mean I get off on being discourteous to random strangers. That's some anger you might want to work off in the gym instead of on the trail.

Again, just because everyone does something, doesn't mean it makes sense. Just because you are weak and constantly need reassurances, doesn't mean everyone else does.
Again, you have to respect people, that's the first and most fundamental rule of civil behavior. Not everyone that's on trail is there to sing kumbaya with you. You're not in an environment where excessive socialization is the norm.

                >You're not in an environment where excessive socialization is the norm.
                Saying hello is excessive now?
It's the usual custom, nothing more.
If you want to fight against social norms, seriously you could find something more important than this.

                Anonymous

The entire point is, that the point of being on trail is to get AWAY from society, to be in NATURE for its healing aspect.
You're forcing, you're violently forcing urban social norms on an activity that is supposed to be an escape from those norms. And you are doing it aggressively from a holier than you stance. You have to stop. The fact that we pass each other on trail is because our cities are so built up that you can't avoid other people using the same trail as you, that's why it's actually polite to IGNORE other people on trail, so that we can all feel like we have the genuine solitude we came for.
You are a completely deluded loser with too much comfort and zero self-awareness. No critical thinking either. No one ever said people with money were smart, most are just lucky.

                >violently forcing

You're really making this a lot bigger than it is
                >it's actually polite to IGNORE other people on trail
and that's straight up delusional, you don't get to make up social norms, just like I don't get to either. They are what they are, and changing them takes longer than the time-frame they're useful.
And, wtf, if you want to be alone in the nature there are plenty of smaller trails, nobody is following you on the less beaten paths. Most people will never put foot there, even if it's just a few meters off the main trail.

Many people hike and access the outdoors to escape the pressures and expectations of their daily lives in urban areas. When you force a greeting and expect one back, you're bringing urban expectations back to a sphere, an environment, where they're often not wanted. The beauty of nature is best experienced in silence, so that the wilderness can speak while humans stay silent.
You have too much money and you can't shut up, is really the problem. Huge egos that are not self-aware.
I am not greeting you on trail, I am not returning a hello, because I understand and expect something higher than the behavior that you're forcing unto me.
