It wasn't. Jeff is right in that regard - you should just do what you enjoy the most and gets you hooked on an active lifestyle, science-based lifting is just a way to minmax your progress, but there's not point to it if it makes you feel like you're doing a chore instead of enjoying the process.

It really isnt though unless that science-based method happens to be precisely what you prefer and enjoy the most and would intuitively train like. What does optimal even mean? How much more gains do you get on optimal routine vs sub-optimal? Is it 98,7% of total results or 95,6%? What are the absolute concrete metrics on a 10 year scale? This is based on nothing but my butthole but I would argue that the difference are negligible at best and in reality lifting the way you want to lift you will make better gains than lifting with the "perfect science based routine" but you dont perform it with 100% intent and efficiency.
Science isn't solved. Well pseudo science like exercise science definitely isn't. The research evolves and flip-flops constantly, you can find scientific study to prove exact opposites about almost anything training/nutrition related and it's not binary. It's a scale. Just like protein intake, it's not with pin-point accuracy, it's a huge scale from like 1,6g per kg to 2,2g per kg. So its not settled because it cant be settled. There simply isnt the best way to train and science cannot prove it.
