Never seen anyone else do it. Most everyone else uses the weight machines. Those that use the free weight mostly use dumbbells. Those that use barbells pretty much only squat and deadlift. I've never seen another person OHP. What's the deal. Are people afraid of embarrassing themselves because they can't lift much?

don't know
don't fricking care
I do OHP in my basement and living room
doesnt allow shoulder joint to work like its supposed to, dumbbells are just better for shoulder lifts
I've never had an issue with barbell OHP. In fact, it is my favorite lift. I think you are coping.
I can rep 1 pl8 on ohp, dumbbell press just feels better
To each their own, but there is no negative to OHP.
I rep 200 on OHP and you are coping
Post a video of you pressing 200 or larp
>he owns 2.5lb weights
Pathetic.

He's right though. You're the one pretending that doing a barbell ohp is some manly thing lol
It is manly. It is so unbelievably alpha. You are literally standing in the MIDDLE of the gym lifting hundreds of pounds OVER your head, OVER everyone else. Normies are in awe. Foids are seething. Bucks are broken. Twinks get aids just for being within a 30m radius. You are gravity defying their 1RM deadlifts over your skull with perfect rigid form. They never even knew barbells could go that high. It literally short circuits their npc brains.
A strong OHP is literally capable of mindfricking NPC morons and homosexuals to the point of killing themselves.
i am a gay bottom and i do ohp
Are you a power bottom
Based
I have tested this theory out and can confirm
185 lb OHP in front of 2 trannies who I have yet to see show up in my gym again. Feelssodamngood OHP chads. Every 1.25 lb increment is adding another troony to the 41% club
Yeah, I try to do OHP everytime I hit the gym. 5x5 and I noticed how quickly I am getting stronger, that and deadlift I have progressed the most in strength.
I never see anyone else doing OHP with a bar though, seen people do it on a bench with dumbells.
Based af, thanks for the motivation.
>seen people do it on a bench with dumbells
So pathetic. Standing OHP with a barbell blows the frick out of my core. It's like the best ab workout. Sitting on a bench and doing DB presses loses so much benefit, and for no reason.
>I never see anyone else doing OHP with a bar though
Doesn't surprise me not that I see half the people on IST don't even do it kek
I have a neutral grip bar, shoulder health +
You dont think your shoulders are naturally supposed to allow you to grab a heavy object with 2 hands and lift it above your head?
the range of motion and path of your elbows is constricted so its not optimal for actual delt activation, you end up hitting other muslces i'm not trying to hit
stop benchpressing the bar standing up then, moron
People who think barbell overhead press is bad for you have poor shoulder mobility and strength. Usually they don’t have the coordination to externally rotate their elbows meaning they can’t get thier heads through their shoulder girdle without something clicking. 70% of people do this naturally but the load minority of mobility gays b***h about muh dumbbell press.
Yes. OHP separates the men from the boys. Most "men" struggle to press 30kg and from a woman's point of view it looks pathetic.
Clean and press? That seperates gods from men.
I think this is true. You have to start at low weight with OHP and work up. Even the roidtrannies are afraid to do it in my gym because they will look weak doing such low weight. Pathetic really, when so much ego is involved.
>You have to start at low weight with OHP and work up
That’s the case with EVERY lift you drooling fricktard
Oh really? When you do a set 5 reps of bench press, you do:
>1 rep at 200lb
>then 1 rep at 190lb
>then 1 rep at 180lb
>then one rep at 170lb
>then 1 rep at 160lb?
Then you do 5 sets of these?
No one starts a bench at their heaviest weight you fricking moron
idk man who cares what the other people at the gym do
liking an exercise nobody else does is a GOOD thing. It means you’re never going to have to wait to use the equipment.
I don’t get why you guys always whine about this stuff. The way i see it the more DYELs doing meme exercises the better.
see picrel if you want a real “manly” lift
Cringe
Shut the frick up b***h homosexual, you in Australia? Come fight me immediately, c**t.
clean and press at commercial gym is the most cringe shit ever lmao. basically the "im gonna make so much noise, everyone look at me look how into fitness I am" type of lift.
Dropping it is fun
You haven't even done acid, poser gay
How is his book? Been considering reading it.
I can OHP 1pl8 for reps but can’t bench 2pl8
>155 OHP 5x5
>225 incline bench 5x5
but now I have impingement so it's over
Don't worry about it, 1pl8 OHP is easier for most people
I think I've seens maybe 4 guys do >1pl8
>tfw 70kg max
>only squat and deadlift
No one benches either? Where on Earth you live?
Yeah they bench. I didn't consider it, because in my gym the bench press is on the other side of the gym and that barbell never leaves then bench.
>barbell ohp is some manly thing lol
I just said I like it. And I don't understand why others don't do it. Fricking Black person.
The reason no-one does it is because there's better shoulder exercises...
This is coming from someone who has been doing it for years and will continue doing it occasionally. It's a fun compound exercise to push yourself with and get stronger at, but I honestly don't believe it gave me any gains whatsoever. Lat raises primarily is what will give you those 3D cannonball delts.
OHP is just way overrated on this board because it's full of powershitters and starting strength enthusiasts.
>Lat raises primarily is what will give you those 3D cannonball delts.
Yeah, heard lat raises are the GOAT for shoulders. I like OHP though.
I prefer ohp to bench. I prefer isolations if I want to grow my shoulders.
I see tons of people doing db ohp, which is similar enough.
Nah I suck at both. Hopefully increasing volume and rep work helps rather than
>muh fives
also doing isolations.
Fair enough, word of warning tho. You're not gonna get canon ball delts until you start pinning gear. I did very high volume shoulder workouts and while my shoulders looked decent. They weren't pumpkins until I started pinning, fwiw.
>Guts posters
How's the first year of lifting going?
This. Loved ohp, but didn't see any gains for side delts. Front delts get overdeveloped. Switched to inclined bench press and lat raises, either lying on the bench, or using block tower. Never going back.
Regular lat raises don't work delts when the muscle is the most stretched. They are shit tier exercise as well
>lat raises, either lying on the bench, or using block tower
How does this work? Can you mspaint it?
awesome anon already linked video for lying lat raised. it's great since in the lower phase most of the job is done by muscles connected to the shoulder blade. Thile when you in horizontal position, the moment of force is the largest in the lowest phase. so you work out lats. Standing lat raises don't do anything for lats for 1/3 of the movement, for the most important part of the movement.
Lat raises with lat tower is like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Om0Bm4g66Ro&ab_channel=RichPiana

It's a hard lift but getting those numbers up feels great and builds some good front delts. I have bottom 5% delt genetics and couldn't even start with the bar. Got it up to 5x6-12 at 145 now after 2 years of work. I'm genetic trash for anything delt related and I mog the frick out of other people at that lift now. If you have normal genetics and you keep at it you'll look like a God practicing that press for a few years and you'll make everyone jealous.
and nobody cares, some programs will have cage press but dumbbells are still the goat for shoulders. Normies are massively impressed by repping 100s.
>Praises barbell standing ohp
>Later copes about how shit their bench press
Why are you homosexuals like this
The fact that this thread has so many homosexuals seething just proves OP's point. Amazing. Start OHPing you homosexuals.
i am a homosexual and i do overhead press
ohp is for homosexuals. join a gayer gym and you'll be able to recruit lift buddies.
I agree with OP. I only see OHP in my private gym. (Me and 1 other guy do it) it is the hardest lift to gain on. I started at 95 lbs 1 rep max 6 months ago and today my 1 rep max is 155. Despite constantly pumping shoulders. But remember: you dont need to lift shoulders heavy. OHP is a slow burn or you will tear some shit and you wont be able to do anything else heavy. I know because i am a doc and refer idiots for rotator cuff repairs every day.
I bought 1.25lb plates for this reason. The progress is super slow.
>Switched to inclined bench press and lat raises
>Regular lat raises don't work delts
What kind of lat raises are you doing now?
Please provide the best resource for form/technique.
probably the best strict form I've ever seen
but you can also do it a bit less strict, by e.g. doing touch and go (starting the lift at rack position instead of at the neck, going down to the neck and pressing up from there etc.)
The main thing to consider is that the grip width in
is not optimal, it's better to hold at about shoulder width, not outside of it
Yes, I am bumping this thread. How could you tell?
I did 130lb singles today. Got two before my body just gave up.
Because the OHP is fricking useless and (generally speaking) a huge fricking burden on every important joint in the upper body. The juice isn't worth the squeeze, you're like 90% more likely to frick up your shoulder in a major way doing barbell OHP, than you're likely to ever see any real going doing barbell OHP.
As it stands, I don't see any legit reason to ever do the barbell OHP.
How the frick could you ever imply lifting something heavy over your head is useless? Are you moronic? Do you live in a bubble? Were you dropped on your head as a baby?
You don't see a reason to do it because you don't lift for anything other than aesthetics. Other people have reasons to do barbell ohp because other people have different values from you.
Please do not bring reason into this chaos, I crave violence in my hellscape.
Gosh this whole thread is such depressing garbage. Full of just outright wrong and moronic shit.
The barbell OHP is good for your shoulders and helps protect them in bench. Literally no one hurts themselves with a properly executed OHP and tons of people with absolutely mangled rotator cuffs can OHP just fine because impingement on the OHP is basically impossible because the scapulae are free to move out of the way, unlike the bench.
You can get huge shoulders just pressing, but if you're pressing b***h weight like 1pl8 that obviously isn't going to happen.
>You can get huge shoulders just pressing, but if you're pressing b***h weight like 1pl8 that obviously isn't going to happen.
>you can get a huge wiener and a hot b***h but without pressing 2pl8 minimum, that isn't going to happen
>without pressing 3pl8 you will never get that [thing] you want
>one more progressive overload
>just 1 more pl8 king
>just 1 more before you hit your goal [thing]
You are the "How much should I bench to get a gf" moron, right? I hate you homosexuals so much it's unreal
dont fear the shadow of the bar crossing your furrowed brow
even fat rippetoe admits that athlets get injuries because they do both ohp and benchpress. but keep being moronic
You frick your rotator cuff during bench because you have so much weight on your joints that if you don't maintain your form immaculately at high weights, it tears the ligaments. The same is not true of OHP, you can literally just look at an anatomy chart or feel it when you do the lift and see this. Oh wait, you don't lift.
>barbell OHP is good for your shoulders and helps protect them in bench
wtf. no it doesn't. your shoulders shouldn't be in danger during bench unless your form is wrong. If you go further than 90 degrees / paralell then bench can frick your shoulder.
it's not a plus for ohp that it helps you bench with shit form better
if its good enough for pongo its good enough for me
>fellow false grip/thumbless presser
based monke
monke don't suicide grip without safeties! be careful!
ohp autist reporting in.
I always grunt and yell and make a lot of noise at the gym when I'm doing ohp lol, it's the only lift where I do that. And I'm totally weak, I can only do 95lbs for 5 right now, can't imagine how ridiculous and stupid I'll be when I hit 1 pl8.
Its just such a cool exercise and I want everyone to watch me do it and hear me go RRAAAHHHH
People don't do OHP because they've yet to get a clue or they have shitty/busted joints. For me, there is no better way to hit the shoulders.
> Heavy Barbell OHP
> Bradford Press for reps
> Arnold Press with DBs
Lateral raises barely do anything for natties. At least from my experience.
I just don't think most people do lat raises correctly, I've been doing cheat reps with higher reps and while my side delts aren't 3d or anything (I'm high bf) they're definitely pretty big and I can rep 25lb dbs strict, and cheat 35lbs.
What's the correct way to do lat raises?
Dude, in my gym almost no one does OHP, Squat or Deadlift, it's like a repeller to them.
Ohp, bench, and barbell shrugs are the only lifts that I even enjoy anymore after 5 years of lifting. Something about those lifts just makes you feel like a badass
I'm starting to think this board is full of shilling powershitters who can only talk about OHP, Deadlifts and Squats.
Other anons already deboonked these exercises and it's pretty much an ego lift, there are better and easier exercises if you care about hypertrophy and isolating, I don't see anyone in my gym doing it and even the shredded guys are doing other variants with dumbbells or machines.
Thoughts?
>Thoughts
Yeah I think you should post body
>thoughts
Yeah I think you should have a nice day and post body pajeet.
It's not powershitters, everyone here is just a moron who talks past each other.
Barbell ohp is based af and I love doing it heavy.
Overhead pressing is not the one key movement to blow up your shoulders. Even with dumbbells it's not the shit-delt panacea. If you only care about hypertrophy, barbell overhead pressing is by far a way less efficient way to get buff than through isolation exercises.
I think most people should do both because you look kinda funny if your shoulders are big but your traps haven't been built because it was all strict cable lateral raises. You look disproportionate and your physique looks unnatural.
Lifting heavy also supposedly benefits your hypertrophy via systemic anabolism. Who knows. I lift heavy because I feel great when I do.
No pressing movement is inherently dangerous, and if you're not stupid you won't get snapped up doing them.
It's congruent for all these statements to be true.
Because other anons know more than all the experts don't they? You people can be so moronic its unreal.
I got a chicks number because I was doing ohp with more weight than she was doing with squats
the OHP is humbling because some people have to start out pressing babby weights Compared to the other compound lift, you really have to leave your ego behind to get good at the lift
It's the other way around, people OHP to look badass since nobody does it, therefore doing it for ego only when there are better exercises posted on this thread.
this is cope, people are in general coping with easier variants, not harder ones. Dumbbell shoulder press allows you to cut the ROM and use more combined weight
there's a reason why zyzz flexed around shoulder pressing 50kg and struggled OHPing 1pl8 at the same time
also, the same thing counts for seated OHP. It's easier because you can lean against the bench and make it a quasi-incline press.
>Dumbbell shoulder press allows you to cut the ROM and use more combined weight
Lifting noob here, I don't really know how this works with dummbell
if you press along the side of your body (the bottom point of the press is when your upper arm is parallel to the floor) you cut about 1/2 of the ROM as compared to a barbell ohp where the bottom of the press is with the barbell at the bottom of your neck
DB presses are the rack pulls of shoulder pressing
can't you adjust and bring the dummbells down nearly touching your shoulders though?
you could, but that would make it closer to an Arnold press. What most people talk about when claiming their db press numbers is the classic bro-form shoulder press along the side
think of this form. he could barbell ohp 1pl8 for some reps in his vids, his 1rm was probably in the 70-80kg range for reference
Zyzz aesthetics still unmatched never doing OHP.
What's ur point?
>inb4 roids
?t=603
he did some barbell OHP but did not showcase it as much
what is wrong with doing dumbell OHP?
I'm the only one who OHP in my gym as well, but that's because I have a home gym.
It appears that OHP is the most controversial lift. From what I gather it is because ego lifters are afraid to do it because they will have to use baby weight.
Wtf how is it possible to do pull-ups with a bench???
What the frick is going on in this thread? Who the hell is scared to lift something above their head? It's like no one has shelves at home anymore.
And why the frick do people type 'lmao', no one can hear you, just talk normal.
It's literally r*ddit transplants my man. Back prior to like, 2013 if you said anything other than lel or kek you got 5 replies telling you to go back.
Grab DB, lean forward with your back straight while standing up, lift weights out to the sides with your arms facing the front of you, but not like a front raise. I have a hard time explaining this tbh. Do them 3x15-20, or 25-30. I'll do strict lat raises at pretty high reps with lower weight. You'll only hurt yourself trying to do straight up front raises (front raises are stupid, do ohp) or if you try and strict lat raise as much weight as you can like if you were "cheating" the reps. Honestly just do a shit ton of lat raises this way and you'll get big side delts. Do rear delt raises too, look up how John meadows does them, pbuh
bitch-speak is always a good indicator for what your dealing with, I've heard rumors that some people even say it in person, they say 'lol' and 'lmao' face to face
nobody on here in 2013 cared enough about reddit to tell you to "go back"
god I remember all you gays going lel topkek all the time. then it morphed into constantly posting tee bee haitch famalam s0ib0i so much they had to wordfilter you slack jawed morons
I do OHP at home and I'm always afraid of people walking in on me and thinking I'm squatting or something because the weight involved is so little. It's embarrassing.
Hello fellow redditors, I also do not OHP. It's very simple, I use weight machines and dumbbells for shoulders, not those barbaric barbells. Oh god no, ew. And the reason for this is simple: science.
after reading through all this thread i feel like i must be doing OHP wrong if im not getting any shoulder pains doing it
Seated OHP>Standing OHP
Why?
Because it's easier
Favorite exercise
>85kg max
Impressive. There are roid trannies out there that can't even do 1 plate because they are embarrassed to start low and progress.
Guys I need help - I did two heavy singles at 130lb and then I couldn’t do anymore reps even when I deloaded to 115lb. Did I hurt myself or just get super fatigued
If you're in doubt its better to choose to rest for a day rather than be forced to rest for 6 months recovering from injury
its my favorite lift
feels good to lift heavy thing over head
PR’d at 105 lbs today bros. The quest for lmao1pl8 continues
keep going, fren.
same bro
Sweet. I've been stalling at doing reps of 95, we gotta keep pushing through.
Been out of lifting for a while. Coming back and am stalled at 95lb for reps. I used to be able to do 145lb for reps. I remember working up to that. It wasn't too bad. One week you just add 2.5lbs for literally only 1 or 2 reps, then drop it down again and finish. Then next week 3-4 reps and drop it down again to finish. Bit of a pain to keep changing weights in the work out, but works.
Stalled at 95 too, took me like 3 months to get to 1pl8, switch to standing dbs for a bit, right after I progressed on them and went back to bb I hit a plate in 2 weeks
I was once like you and with a little determination you'll be like me within a year or two at most
I do 5x5 50kg OHP is that considered alright?
What are the benefits of dumbellOHP over barbell?
Does anyone here do DB?
stablising dumbbells overhead over yourself, overhead press or bench, tends to be harder than doing so with a barbell. If you like the barbell OHP, dumbbell can be a way to drive progress with the barbell, since stability and balance is a huge part of the barbell OHP. So if you've got a problem where one bad rep will sink your set with the barbell some assistance work with dumbbells will absolutely drive progress.
OHP isn't terribly good as a shoulder isolation exercise, because of course it is not a shoulder isolation exercise, and that is mostly what people want out of a shoulder exercise these days. It's hard to explain the appeal of a shoulder exercise that depends on a solid posterior chain to most folk.
Really, the problem was its disqualification as a competitive lift. It ceased to be "sexy", and just became an exercise among others that had little appeal to casual gym goers.
Is having it literally straight over your head necessary? I find it hard to tuck my chin down while continuing to rep at a decent pace. I feel it throws me off way too much so I end up just looking slightly upward the whole time.
You move your head back going up, you don't tuck it.
Go straight up till nose/forehead, push head through, and bar goes back a little and up to lockout.
Reverse on way down.
Bar locks out somewhere above my shoulders, not in front of my head.
I think he might be saying you start at bar(45lbs) or like 90lbs, then once your form is good go up, or go up slowly as you get better at the movement.
If someone can do say.. 90lb DB's then sure might want to start at 135 or 165lbs and go up from there.
It's decent. Probably been training for a year or so.
Impressive would be 165+ for 12.
Is a 135lbs x 12 OHP good for someone who is 205lbs?
i'm struggling to get past 40kg, what should I do?
what does your current sets and weekly regime look like?
everything i've learned seems to say you want to hit a muscle group at least twice per week for at least 12 total sets per week, and that increasing sets helps a lot of the time
so if you're doing 3x10 at 50kg twice per week you can probably add another 3 sets (maybe mix it up with different isolations to work front, mid, rear delts)
That's kinda low anon. I would try and do it early in your program, higher reps, and enough sets.
do some tricep, and shoulder isolations too.
Make sure to keep a good brace in your core and glutes too. Helps drive power through.
If that doesn't work maybe go do some DB pressing later, or as the main variant for a bit.
>Are people afraid of embarrassing themselves because they can't lift much?
No they aren't wasting their time with an exercise that objectively will not grow your shoulders
lmao, look at this cope, my shoulders grew just fine doing a simple 5x5 ohp progression, you just suck?
seated dumbbell press master race
It looks scary to normies so they avoid it (despite being the safest of the big lifts).
One of the most aesthetic shredded and muscular guys at my gym does OHP for 5x5 and he's pretty fricking aesthetic, great proportions, wide shoulders, well develop shoulder/chest ratio. I'll keep doing them.
I did alright with 5x5 but started to stall hard. Now I am doing 4x8 with double dynamic progression and it's fun again.
OHP is literally my favourite lift. I've always done it so hard to judge but my shoulders are pretty big compared to others I see in the gym. OHP and lateral raises are all I do.
do you get more plates with more dates?
I'm not a roider so they're not that big lel
I did OHP today, I clean it off the floor
I also see people mostly using machines
I clean and dB press, noone does this
I think benching is the people's choice for pressing movements
>t.floridian
How do all normies get sucked into machine using?
Because if they frick up on BBs they can only blame themselves
Wtf, are you me? Am I you?
>powerlifting exercises are a meme
>PPL is a meme
What am I supposed to do?
Train how you want, with consistency and hard effort.
Bad advice.
