I really think it’s high time the fitness industry has a discussion about risk vs reward when it comes to dangerous lifts like squats and deadlifts.

Too many injuries. Too many deaths. Too much risk. People should ditch these immensely dangerous exercises from their lifting routine.

              >Lifting is a low IQ sport. Since meatheads are lifting and low IQ, lifting is dangerous.

I'm rich. Started on Wall Street and went into tech. 95% of founders and CEO's are fitness nuts. And 90% of their efforts are toward endurance sports. I'm in a tiny minority who visibly lifts and I do indeed look out of place at something like a summer gathering when everyone's in tshirts and golf shirts. The joke is I'm someone's chief of security. For point of reference I'm around natty limit (think Georges St Pierre).

Lifting may not be exercise for dummies but the elites do disdain it. That's why Jeff Bezos got so much attention when he hit the TRT. It's unusual. Slowly changing, but still unusual. Of course the wives always tell me they wish their Zuckerbergs would lift a bit and couldn't I encourage them, at which point I reenact this video

Same with track athletes, or crossfitter, or strongman, or basketball player, or footballer, etc. Literally every sport or competition, and I don't mean just at the Olympic level. Even at amateur levels, literally every single person has experienced some sort of injury that has impeded performance or training.

Fun fact: track actually has the most injuries per capita out of any sport.

Yes, there can be a difference between Olympic lifting and lifting enhanced by steroids regarding the weight used and personal records.

        Olympic Lifting (Drug-Free):
In Olympic lifting competitions where athletes compete without the use of performance-enhancing drugs, the weights lifted are a reflection of the athletes' natural strength, technique, and training efforts. Athletes in this category achieve their personal records through hard work, dedication, and disciplined training. The weight lifted reflects their true physical capabilities without the aid of steroids or other performance-enhancing substances.

        Lifting Enhanced by Steroids:
When athletes use steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs to enhance their strength, muscle mass, and recovery, it can lead to significant improvements in their lifting capabilities. Steroids can allow athletes to recover faster between workouts, experience increased muscle growth, and lift heavier weights than they would without the drugs.

As a result, athletes using steroids can achieve higher personal records and lift heavier weights compared to their natural capabilities. This enhanced strength and muscle mass can create a notable difference in the weights lifted between athletes who use steroids and those who compete drug-free.

It's important to remember that the use of steroids in sports is not only unethical and against the rules but also dangerous to one's health. The long-term risks and side effects associated with steroid use outweigh any short-term gains in performance.

Athletes who compete drug-free in Olympic lifting and other sports deserve recognition for their dedication, hard work, and achievements achieved through natural training and athletic prowess. Lifting weights naturally and competing without the aid of performance-enhancing drugs is the true spirit of fair competition and sportsmanship.

Holy shit, his spotter caused his death.
The spotter trying to hold the weight up kept the weight from falling backward and meant the lifter had no room to fall backward with the bar where it would have fell down harmlessly without forcing his neck forward and breaking it.

If the spotter was not there he literally could have bailed and been fine but the spotter prevented him from bailing.

Never squat heavy with a spotter unless you have two on either side so you still have room to fall backwards.

      >Although he had a spotter behind him, it didn’t help. The spotter also didn’t appear to be in an ideal position to help with this accident.
What a moronic thing to write, there is no possible way a single spotter couldve helped this. Side spotters couldve helped but even then if they dont grab the barbell before the squatter breaks his own neck with the bar it doesnt matter

        Anonymous

A good spotter could have helped. The position of a rear spotter on a squat should be close to a zercher squat, so assuming he’s reasonably strong he should be able to instantly take 200+ lbs (at least half the weight in this case) off of the person doing the squat.

People misunderstand what a single spotters job is. It isn’t to miraculously recover the entire weight of a lift in the event of catastrophic failure. It’s to take enough of the weight to allow a lifter to finish the motion and return to a safe position once it’s apparent (as it was briefly in this case when the squatter started going back down) that the lift has been failed.

Also, safety bars are useful and would have saved this persons life if placed appropriately.

          Anonymous

It looked like he was already dumping the weight forward by the time a spotter couldve done anything, which a single spotter simply cant help. Maybe he wouldve just had a sore neck in that case given that the weight rolling forward combined with the rapid movement of falling on his ass is what snabbed him. A lack of safeties was the main issue here i agree

Listen dude, I'll level with you; you know how you go from one country or region to another and the culture changes? How you can do something that's normal where you're from and it gets you yelled at or worse in the new place? It's the same thing with forums and other social websites. You're obviously coming from somewhere like Reddit that has a strong left leaning bias and has notoriously tyrannical moderation. This website isn't the same in any respect. An example is the term newbie. It's not necessarily an insult, except from guys who haven't seen the sun in 12 years maybe, but if he called you newhomosexual that would be a for sure insult. Same with poorgay, which means you're broke, as another example. Since there also isn't a reputation system and this place operates kindof like an oldschool forum you can't rely on saying feel good things to try and win people over for upvotes or anything like that. You should at least learn how to speak to people here. Otherwise you should probably leave or else you're just going to doomscroll and tank your mental and emotional health. Resilience is a must have trait to socialize here because there are plenty of sociopathic basement goblins intermixed with the normal people. In general this website is much more pro free speech than the forums you're probably used to and your replies show that. Please act in a way that makes my effortpost worth the time I put into it.
P.S. the people here have a general disdain for pepe but like peepo, marv, and apu a lot. Choose your frogs carefully if you don't want to be insulted. Also rare frogs that aren't commonly seen are liked a lot too. I'll post one attached to this reply

                Thank you for the reply.

I understand how it works here and generally turn a blind eye to the more offensive/racist/homophobic comments and post on this board.

But this is the only board I use on this site because I take an interest in fitness. From what I know, this board is blue which means that some of the more extreme content is moderated. So I don’t expect to see gore when I browse this place and I think many others are in the same position. Isn’t it right that I should give them a quick heads up before they make the same mistake?

Look, I really appreciate the time you took to write that and I’m not paying any attention to the vile comments other members have sent me but I’m going to stand up for what I think is right.

Ahahahahhahah frick high bar. Also frick no squatting in the cage with safeties.

No, just a regular squat with 18 spotters that don't know what they're doing when regular safeties would have been more effective and not get in the way of the camera shot. The moron could have just dropped the weight behind him if those guys weren't in the way. High bar is much safer and more natural than low bar, it really takes effort to frick it up like that.

I don't understand what the frick a spotter is supposed to do from the front or the back. Like, you're not gonna front raise 210 fricking kg and save the guy. Even from the sides, unless you got a couple of absolute units who can lift your plates strong man style, what are they gonna do except frick with your ability to move freely?

Let’s be real for a second

Most “spotters” never actually expect to spot. They just want to be in the mix, looking they’re doing something so they get some of the attention from the guy actually lifting.

When the shit hits the fan and it’s time to help, they end up killing the lifter.

            Ego spotting is deadly.

              Anonymous

Accurate. They don’t expect to do anything and they have no idea how to spot someone safely if something does go wrong. I’d also add the lifters typically have no idea how to work with a spotter. As other anons have pointed out it changes how you fail a lift.

            Anonymous

Good spotters should be as strong as your are and paying close attention to your lift. So yes two side spotters for a 400lb squat should be able to stop the bar instantly and move it wherever necessary. 200 pounds is not that heavy for strong lifters in the right position.

        Anonymous

He could've bailed the squat but didn't want to throw the barbell back because the squatter was there. So he did the next good move, put +180kg on your neck instead and hope it won't snap your vertebrae

This place is a crab bucket of insecure losers lacking in confidence, basic hygiene and refusal to go outside and improve social skills. Funny part is when they do finally get a good physique they still have the same problems as before because they refused to do the work to change their mindsets so they evolve into gymcels. And then some get hooked on steroids thinking it will be the magic bullet that solves everything and before you know it they finally get a gf and the mires they desperately wanted for validation but now their hormones are fricked for life, dick and balls have shrunk (they dont recover) starting to feel the effects of ED and they become extremely sad or angry for no reason. Tale old as time. Stop giving a frick now and just lift loser. Nothing wrong with having goals but you need to keep your ego in check because its being bruised because you keep thinking "i'm not good enough" or "i'll be happy when (insert thing you want happens)"

that's assuming not getting a gf is something you can't fail if you do everything right. 2/3s of young guys are effectively incels, only 1/3 of girls are not in relationships and that's only voluntarily

This roided-up chink died squatting less than the ORM of many naturals. That… really puts things into perspective. The gym is where we go to live better but— ironically— you can’t make good gains unless there’s a strong possibility that you die or get hurt, or somebody else kills you. Every time you lift, you are fighting against Thanatos, ready to take another sacrifice for the gym. I will use this as motivation today and go for some big lifts.

The back spotter really did kill him. Even if he did sit down and dump the bar forward like a moron if the spotter wasn't behind him bracing his body his core would have collapsed and his whole body fall forward with the hips shooting back far before his neck snapped. Also the immediate flexor posturing holy shit his spinal cord was fricked immediately.

In short don't squat with a back spotter, side spotters or just use safeties like a non moron.

I've spotted, and saved, much heavier squats like this and I'm practically DYEL. If you want to spot a squat from the back, you don't save it by grabbing the bar, that's fricking moronic, you get up close and personal behind them, like you're going to frick them up the ass (don't), give them a big bear hug around the chest, and squat the weight up with them. When done correctly (it's not hard), you can instantly lift at least 50% of your max squat weight for them, so unless the dude passes out you can both easily complete the (failed) lift together.

Hot take: The spotter and the lifter both knew this, but they wanted a better angle for the Instagram shot, since that's the focus for "influencer" lifters. Either way the spotter has some 'splaining to do.

you forgot to mention that you're supposed to insert your erect penis into his behind so you're properly locked together like a trailer on a truck. the male member can lift up to 10% of your max squad, too so you increase your potential assist from 50% to 60%.

good way to pop someone's eyes out if they're lifting 200+ kg or alternatively have the bar roll directly into your own neck and snapping it in half too.
the only way you can safely spot someone's squat from the back, when they are effectively not using a rack or safeties, is to transition into a front squat yourself, and that isn't possible to do at 200+ kg when the inertia of the bar alone is going to snap your shit if you get in its way.

If you just do three sets of 5 or heavy triples and increase the weight bit by bit this will never happen unless someone pushes you while you're squatting or you get very unlucky with an aneurysm/stroke in the middle of the lift.

That mindset is b***h. I've dumped 1rm squats plenty of times. Gotta use safeties if you're getting near your maximal load.

Safeties would have saved him, or not having a spotter behind and dumping the bar off his back

Kek this is why i never even needed spotters when back squatting. I’ve attempt a lot of 1rms and failed a lot of them. I do very Olympic style high bar back squat too, and if you want training videos online you’ll see how they do no no no squats , meaning no belt no wraps no spotters. You simply dump the weight off your back if you fail the squat. This spotter actually may have killed the guy.

Another victim of the MUH SPOTTERS meme. Use safeties. This goes for every lift (where it makes sense). No, having some sweaty moron standing with his nuts over your face isn't better than just arching properly and benching in a rack with safeties. If a spotter wants to help with the unrack OK but if I'm going to fail just let me lower it onto the pins. Doing a heavy squat with some person dry humping you as a form of "safety" is the dumbest shit imaginable. What are they going to do if you actually fail the rep? As we can see here, nothing at all. They're just going to throw you off balance and make you really fail the rep while preventing you from dumping the weight off your back. The spotter literally got this man killed by holding the bar and trapping it on his neck instead of letting him drop it. I've failed loads of squats in a rack with heavier weight than what got this guy killed and I've had zero issues. If you're doing a full powersharter setup with three or more people acting as spotters OK that can work but if you think one incompetent person humping your back is going to save you on a heavy squat fail you're playing with your life.

Safeties too low. It takes ten seconds to test whether or not the safeties are at a good height and then you never need to do it again on that rack if you remember your setup. Furthermore, if you're in a full rack why not just use real safeties instead of those dog shit mini half ones that he was about to miss? What the frick were these people thinking?

This is unironically not that bad for a one rep max attempt. If he hadn’t accidentally killed himself at a later time, nobody would be super critical. Could’ve given himself a moment to prepare for the descent, a slower and more controlled descent would’ve been better, and some forward leaning on the ascent but the speed was good, even out of the hole. All in all, not dangerous and probably would’ve passed in a meet. Just ugly.

I don’t get it, if it’s that heavy and your stuck in the middle, just go back to the atg bottom and dump the weight. This guy lacked the flexibility/form to go all the way down in order to dump it properly.
