Is a "diverse diet" largely a meme?

Basically every single animal on the planet only eats specific local food which surrounds said animal, yet we're fed the idea that we have to eat Mexican avocados, bananas from Ecuador and Chinese rice in order to be healthy.

What gives?

People can survive for life on a diet of only meat and grains. Naturally they will get a little bit of extra variety like fruits and veggies without even really trying.
Lots of old ration plans available where soldiers would get bread, meat, and some beer every day, and that was their rations they would live on for years at a time.

I think its more along the lines of making sure you get sufficient amounts of micronutrients not that you have to eat food from specific regions of the planet. Sure different vegetable varieties from foreign countries might have more nutrients than their domestic counterparts but that doesn't necessarily mean you need to get them

Allegedly hunter gatherers ate way more of a variety of plants than we do now. Most people eat the same 2-3 fruits and veggies 90% of the time.

yeah hunter gatherers had donkeys and donkeys only eat the finest herbs, they're very picky
basically chilling in the mountains eating highest quality herbs and spices with meat, fruit and eggs

Hunter gatherers almost exclusively ate meat. In times of scarcity they would eat anything that fight outright kill them.
Most plants with any kind of significant yield to humans weren't selectively bred yet. That's why agricultural societies would frequently get sacked or wiped out for centuries by nomadic people. Agricultural life took time to scale up and be able to compete

      No. This is completely wrong.
Hunter gatherers were more hunter than gatherer and ate almost exclusively nothing but meat.
Humans have been hyper-carnivores for the last 2 million years.

        >Hunter gatherers were more hunter than gatherer and ate almost exclusively nothing but meat.
        >All studies, including the earliest-studied population of Sima del Elefante (1.2 Mya) (K. Hardy et al., 2017) and the Qesem Cave, Israel (400 Kya) (K. Hardy et al., 2016), identified plant remains in tooth plaque and even evidence for cooked starch (but see García-Granero, 2020).
        >Out of 31 dental calculus analysis cases listed in K. Hardy et al. (2018, table 1), only four cases did not show starch residues. The assemblage of cases suggests that consumption of plants was common, although one has to take into account that the consumption of starch encourages dental plaque formation (Brown, 1975; Scannapieco et al., 1993) and that we do not know the percentage of teeth that were not sampled because they had no calculus. But even if we had these data, the identification of plants in dental calculus cannot tell us what the relative plant consumption of the individual was. However, we can summarize that the archaeological and ethnographic record shows that plant foods were a frequent component of the Paleolithic diet.

Yes, it's a meme, pushed in part as good-enough advice for morons and in part as an opportunity for slop merchants to sell you toast AND pancakes AND waffles AND muffins AND pastries AND croissants AND bagels. People given a greater variety of food tend to eat more overall and the slop merchants know this.

On the moron level, you have morons who eat only gummy bears, Dr. Pepper and mac&cheese then wonder why they have scurvy. So if you tell morons to do this they'll eat some pizza and bagel bites and eat a burger and that'll help their gums from bleeding out from total vitamin C deficiency.

You can survive on like 2-3 carefully chosen foods, but can completely thrive just eating only dozen. You should check out the nutrients if you're going to eat a narrow amount but you'd do well with just these:

    >eggs
    >milk (yogurt, cream, butter)
    >salmon
    >beef
    >chicken
    >broccoli
    >tomatoes, other vegetables
    >nuts, peanuts
    >mushrooms
    >coconut
    >quinoa

And you could probably get by just fine with even less than that if you wanted.

If your idea of a diverse diet is to eat exotic food, your idea and the reality of the concept don't line up.
It just means not only eating the same thing, like don't exclusively eat beef, broccoli and potatoes. Mix it up every now and then

Animal products, barring a diet of all other forms of sustenence (carbs and sugars) will give you atherosclerosis at the age of 85-90. We know this from old Inuit and Alaskan native American studies from the 1800s.
