Pretty much. The final form of CICO is
    >I just eat more food when I want to gain weight, and I eat less food when I want to lose weight
No complicated meme diet bullshittery, just basic shit that people have been doing for thousands of years

      >just basic shit that people have been doing for thousands of years
      This is the filter.
I started eating like my grandpa and he ate the way his grandpa taught him.
People weren't complete morons and we've figured out what we need and humans have survived all over the planet just fine. A lot of the issues we've had have come from agriculture like beriberi, fricked up teeth/jaw or here the lack of selenium in the ground which led to heart problems which led to North-Karelia project which led to a LOT of people dying because of moronic dietary guidelines which are in effect even today. And all of that becaue of large-scale agriculture and pretending we know better than those before us.

        >North-Karelia project
Elaborate, I only saw reports of it's success.

          Anonymous

Basically during it they realised it made frick-all difference compared to someone from a city, it was realised selenium was the issue, or lack of it in our ground thus putting it into the ground with fertilizers. Bing bang boom, heart issues went away, from that cause anyway.
But just like Ancel Keys, they couldn't take the blow to their egos and admit they were wrong, they just published it and told everyone that butter and animal fats are the satan and how rapeseed oil is liquid jesus. Keys even cited the project as rousing success and an example.
And now we're fatter and sicker than ever before.

Every single fricking nutritionist israelite scammer should be shot, hanged and salted before being burned. I hate them so much, they've cause millions of deaths worldwide and most people aren't even aware of how much damage their lies have caused.

              >Are you Finnish or just saying for ejole human population?
Finn anon and this was mostly for finnish but I feel this applies to many westernized countries as well.
              >Got links for heart disease data?
No hard data, haven't even browsed the internet for this stuff.
Just books from the local library and local history and what my grandpa talked about.
I have my opinions about our current (finnish) dietary guidelines and how we grow our food and what we eat and I might very well be dead wrong but its gone downhill since the karelia project was claimed a rousing success and I've seen first hand what children are fed in schools and its not good (worked as a cook).

i am not sure i agree or disagree.
i think people through trial and error collectively worked out how to eat but there was not really much deliberate reflection involved.
so cut people off from their traditional foodways and they show you that they are moronic because they can't figure out how to put together the pieces of good health from what they have.

That was what I was going for, we figured out pretty good diets and ways to survive but we haven't yet adapted to modern society and its pitfalls.

      >I just eat more food when I want to gain weight, and I eat less food when I want to lose weight
Well, define "more food". My dishes are less calorically dense when cutting so there's "more food", namely salad, veggies, potatoes and such. I technically "eat less" when bulking with cheeses, pasta, peanut butter and that stuff.

        You gotta reframe your mind.
100 calories of broccoli is the same amount of "food" as 100 calories of cheese.
The human drive to fill our stomachs to be full became obsolete with industrialization. Food scarcity is a meme in the USA. Where I live(blue state), even the hobos are fat.

          Anonymous

I think my point didn't come across: I'm not refuting CICO, I'm talking about caloric density. In layman's terms (aka normie understanding of the world) a big bowl of salad is "more food" than a spoonful of peanut butter, yet it's much better to lose weight. The average person is clueless about these things, I know it's just semantics but people work like that. Recommending CICO, which is purely numbers, is much different than the subjective "eat more to gain weight and less to lose weight". How many times have we seen some fatty trying the "ice cream diet" or something utterly moronic like that, common sense isn't common.

its not iq, its humility. the "midwit" is just arrogant and insecure so they follow what ever is officially correct so they can feel intelligent and morally superior. I've known lots of dumb people that fit the "midwit" stereotype. but anyways, its not as simple as calorie in, calorie out because the goal is to get your body to burn fat which it will not do if your insulin is high. if you snck on 1000 calories of sugar through out the day you will not burn fat and just feel like garbage, its much more practical and effective to manage insulin instead of calories.

CICO should be the norm for weight loss and just assume that any autists who claim that you can eat like 4000 calories a day if you're sedentary and omit either carbs or fats from your diet without gaining weight are just shitposting or outright braindead (talking to you ketotards and delusional ultra low fat autists). that being said, weight loss =/= overall health so that's where CICO comes short

It's also about muscle retention. Weight loss on a high protein diet vs high carb or fat diet will net different results at the end in terms of body composition. Protein also nets you less usable energy and has a higher energy requirement for digestion, so it would aid weight loss. But it all summs to calories in vs out, even factoring different effects of certain foods/diets. Anyone who denies this is moronic, especially the "THE BODY USES ENERGY/NUTRIENTS NOT CALORIES" crowd. It's like saying something isn't 100 meters because meters don't actually exist. Just because it's how we measure something doesn't mean that measurement is meaningless

This may be incidentally true in some cases, but a diet's macronutrient profile isn't what modulates lipolysis and proteolysis.

Unironically true. The amount of people who don't actually know how much they put in their body is wild. That, and people don't work nearly hard enough to craft a good body or burn the calories they have in excess.

Its pretty evident when you start paying attention. I'm pretty light, but when I'm trying to put on mass and start counting, eating in excess quickly starts putting mass on my body. When I stop, I quickly lose it.

CICO is good, but there is some important nuance - but that's mostly about eating the kinds of food that will help you keep your calories down.

High sugar, high fat, foods, especially stuff with a soft texture, but a hard/crispy/snappy exterior (mars bar/fried chicken/hot dog) are what's known as "hyperpalatable". It's really addictive, and it causes hunger hormones to increase, and satiety hormones to decrease.

Other than that, eating a lot of Omega-3 seems to help your gut bacteria, and a healthy microbiome has been linked to weight loss.

If your only goal is weight loss then sure
But if you want to recomp it does matter what you're eating. If you eat at a calorie deficit and all you're eating is bread and pasta, you're going to end up skinny fat

Me on the left, CICO just works, I'll just eat less when I want to cut.

CICO is a fact of the universe. HOW you get to the caloric differential matters. If you simply eat reduced portions of crappy foods, you will be in a negative calorie balance, but you won't feel as good and you're likely not to sustain it. Technically sitting on the couch and eating Doritos is CICO if I eat below my maintenance calories.

People who successfully lose weight and keep it off make underlying lifestyle changes with respect to their food choices, exercise, sleep, social circles, hobbies etc., not through a short-term "diet" to hit a goal weight. This is why so few people lose weight and fewer still maintain it.

CICO is like saying "to avoid hypothermia, maintain a body temperature of at least 95 degrees." It's true, but if you're out in the cold, what matters more is knowing how to make a fire and find shelter.

Yup. I lost 70lbs last year and a big part wasnt just CICO it was choosing to eat high satiety foods. Thanks, potato.

so just to clear this once and for all
if I need 2500 for maintain, and I work out for 500 kcal, and I eat 3000 clean, protein heavy meals, is this not going to help me lose weight at 22% BF? or will it?

      Anonymous

I don't think it will and if it does it will take a lot time to be visible.
Gaining muscle while maintaining the amount of fat your body holds will decrease bf% eventually.
      For example:
      >start of with 15%bf, 75kg
      >ff 1 year, where you gain 5kg of muscle but little fat
      >you now weigh ~ 80kg and have 14%bf

        Anonymous

hmmm so maintaining BF is easy while gaining weight, but losing it is hard while also lifting progressively heavier weights?

so if I am working out for 2 years, and managed to go from 28 to 22 and can lift some decent numbers now, should I just cut a lil and do what I do to get down to 15-17 and then bulk clean while increasing the weights?

          Anonymous

going from 22 to 15 will probably take forever if you don't cut
but if you are at it, I wouldn't go from 22 to 15, but rather to 13 so that your abs show more

it's not fit as a whole, it's just that some people lie to themselves instead of facing reality. when a class of people with comfortable lives throughout childhood, unmarred and unaware of hardship, you get a sort of sociopathic group that think they control elements of reality itself. Historically this usually only developed in the ruling and priest classes
      >Pre buddhism/jainism india had Bramins acting like the gods served them
      >Republican Roman Patricians who once held the value of military service highly would vote to start wars just to send their sons off to fight them, grew to see the military as plebeian work. The military became the new working class
      >Chinese history is full of courts writing poetry about desiring unifying conquest instead of doing it and courts too caught up in intrigue to bother responding to revolts and invasion.
      >The french aristocracy threw parties to project power while the populace and lower aristocrats suffered from natural disaster and starvation
Modernity is a first only in that it happens to a majority of a nations populace. When you find someone talking shit about cico, you speak to a decadent bastard who needs realities hammer upon him.

Saying calories in, calories out is like saying the economy is money in, money out. It's true but it's an oversimplification to get an idea across. The mechanisms, diet choices, lifestyle, opportunities and roadblocks behind calories in and calories out is a complex subject. No health coach in the world is going to tell you "lmao just eat less"

cico is generally true but a simplification, drinking 10 000 kcal of melted ice cream won't make you gain 2.5kg of fat even though 3000kcal is one kg of fat whereas if you ate 1000kcal surplus for a few week you would easily gain 2.5kg

A carb heavy diet fills up your glycogen stores, good if you want a high CO.

The meme should be inverted. Low IQ eat what they want with no thought in it and they can build mass because they don't overthink it. Midwits fall for meme diets like veganism/bro diets/IIFYM which hyperfocus on things like macros but have no focus on satiety, bioavailability or the nutrient ratios of natural wholefoods, high IQ people understand that Traditional wisdom has more utility than muh science and that if you just eat according to your evolutionary diet you don't even need to track anything.

weighing/tracking a diet = pure midwittery. Midwits can't figure out that if your diet needs to be tracked or supplemented, it isn't natural. Midwits can't understand first principles, they frame everything in terms of ~~*studies*~~ which most of the time are incompetent.

giving CICO as advice to someone who wants to slim down is as smoothbrained as coaching a sportsball team and telling them to just score more than the other guys

you're stripping away all the nuance and missing the problem entirely. That being said, CICO is a good reminder to people that deny physics exist and claim wild shit like "your metabolism slows down".

tl;dr CICO is the "what" don't be a dummy and confuse it for the "how"
