Is jogging a waste of energy?

For the last year or so I've been focusing on two simple things: lifting most days of the week and not being idle (aka, getting my steps in).

Now whenever I go to the park to get my steps in and listen to my tunes, I see loads of joggers. Many of them are fat. Many of them are old. Many of them are in the worst of physical conditions after years of purposeful neglect. And the guys that have the fanciest running gear are the worst of all.

Anyway, my point is, every single person that I see running in my local inner city park is fricking shit at jogging. Most of them can barely jog faster than the pace of a 'quick march' - which is the speed I walk at when I go walking. And every other jogger that passes me when I'm out walking, in a few hundred yards down the line gives up gasping for air. And not only are they all shit at it, but none of them look as though they are actually enjoying it.

What is the point of jogging? Is there really any additional benefits to jogging 5k each morning as opposed to say, walking 15,000 to 25,000 steps each day at a good speed? And perhaps the odd hike thrown in every so often? Why not just fricking walk? I bet most of the runners I see in that park (never the same face twice) go home kaput and barely do any walking for the remainder of the day.

In terms of building a bullet proof endurance running is highly inefficient except if you go for ultra distances. In terms of costs it appears good at first, but there are better ways for cadio training without equipment.

Jogging is part of running. You can't go around sprinting every single time you know

I know that. But most of these people are struggling to maintain a jog which isn't
much faster than marching pace. If you are jogging so slow that a man that is merely walking at pace is more or less able to catch up with you, and you're out of breath, why not just walk?

        >If you are jogging so slow that a man that is merely walking at pace is more or less able to catch up with you, and you're out of breath, why not just walk
Sometimes when I run more then 50-60k and my feet refuse to cooperate anymore I jog so slow its barely above walking pace but I only do it because I feel like throwing away my limbs like that is more efficient than just walking and walking feels harder than doing that awkward jogging. Maybe they do the same but they are trying to get fit and it's hard for them. Who knows, some people are just lazy but even if they are slow joggers atlwast they re not sedentary

You do you anon. I like jogging, it clears my mind so it makes me happy. If you don't like it then don't do it

Training for 100k. If you're goint to ask me what's the point of that too I don't know what to answer kek. I just like it, long distance running is therapeutic, give it a try

if you want to be a runner and look good, spriting is the only way to go, the only reason to jog is for cardio gains, it will literally grow your heart and it will work less for the remainder of your life, i have a resting heartbeat of under 50 and i'm not even that active running anymore, once or twice a week if i feel like it, and i don't push it anymore, however i did an ecocardiogram and it showed my heart was big and strong, the doctor was impressed, i told him i ran a lot a few years back, so by going trough that process you get long term health gains, obviously they won't last forever, but you wont lose them over night either, it's easy for me to go back and run

said its good for your heart.

You get the benefits of walking in a shorter period of time. It's useful if you have only a short time to exercise before work.

I've heard that argument before but from personal experience I can say it's not true. Walking 2-3 hours is much more beneficial than jogging for 30 minutes.

How could you determine that from personal experience? Sounds like total bullshit. Walking isn't cardio and doesn't count as exercise at all unless you're profoundly obese.

          >How could you determine that from personal experience?
I just did both for several years on and off for the last 13 years and drew my conclusions.
          >Walking isn't cardio and doesn't count as exercise at all unless you're profoundly obese.
Idk. Walk faster. I also often carry a ~20lbs backpack. If you walk 3-4mph uphill you will feel it, not that that is even necessary but if you want "exercise" there it is.

I walk 1000 miles every summer in the mountains, 30-40k daily, and all I do to maintain my cardio and endurace is a daily 10k walk. It works, you don't need more.

          >Walking isn't cardio and doesn't count as exercie
I managed to get my resting hr to 43 by walking 30km at a time, that was before I was running. If it wasn't cardio it wouldn't have had an effect on my heart

There are studies that show that people that do 60-90 minutes of cardio daily are in the best shape compared to those that don’t.

It’s not a waste. Jogging at a comfortable pace will improve your resting heart rate, release endorphins, and improve your sleep. Definitely worth it to keep doing. Stop focusing on other people so much.

What's easier? Lifting a weight 10 times in a row, then stopping, or lifting a weight once, resting, lifting it once, resting, etc.? The only cardio that actually works out your heart and lungs is the cardio you do past the point of comfort. It's about getting your heart rate up, then sustaining it for a period of time. And yes, this means that over time, as you condition yourself, you either need to do even more cardio to get the same workout.

not true. You just need to slightly activate it. No need to feel uncomfortable.

I personally know a 95 years old grandpa who walks 12 km everyday since he was 50 and he's healthy as frick now. He said his BP is always good.

He never runs, just walk leisurely for years.

I don't care. I WILL win my local marathon, came in 41st place this year. Will be competitive in 2 more years of training, assuming it stays an amateur race (no prize money).
