      They're both. 25% of the calories come from protein and they have plenty of slow digesting carbs. 1.5 cups of cooked beans gives you 300kcal and 18g of protein. Toss that as black beans with a little olive oil, lime juice, salt, and cilantro to get a tasty bean salad. Pair with some grilled chicken or lean steak and that's a good lunch

        they ARE present but only in limited quantities (~10%) compared to red meats
        That said getting the amount you need from beans not meat would require multiple days worth of food per day in beans alone
        and of the ~10 not present in beans only 2 are not made by your own body (which is to say given the requisite building blocks your body still does not metabolise these 2 amino acids), and those 2 are cystine and tryptophan, which can be obtained from other monocot species seeds and meat/egg/cheese (cystine). Realistically the amount of meat you strictly NEED is much lower than people think in total, though a balanced diet is always king as evidenced by the fact that even tryptophan is high in meat products too, fairly well complimenting the gap left by beans in moderation.

    I'm not telling anyone to be vegan. Animal products are good.

    But a can of beans, a dry measure cup of rice, and some greens is the ultimate IST lunch. Tons of energy and a good amount of protein too.

    I have been eating six eggs and a can of beans for a couple of weeks now
