Because people actually frick each other up in hardcore/metalcore moshpits and that filters out the pussies. I'm a pussy myself and I mostly really listen to Thrash metal. Black Metal as a genre is "harder" but the fans aren't - they're all the kind of people who think making the music harsher makes them tougher, which obviously doesn't follow. Hardcore fans just like partying rough. I do like Merauder but they're crossover Thrash.
Usually the more extreme shit is depressive loser stuff while metalcore is an extroverted, social genre with moshing and all that. Also, Harm's Way is an exception most metal genres are just fat guys and skinny teens.
