This occurs in chronic alcoholics who replace meals with alcohol for a period of about a decade. If they drink 1 energy drink per week, such as red bulls or monsters, this will never happen to them since they're constantly replenishing their B vitamins. They'll still be super unhealthy but that particular issue is as avoidable as scurvy.

While alcohol impacts GABA receptors, cannabinoids affect so many different areas of the body. Chronic abuse can lead to depression, lethargy, low testosterone, and other issues.

As for gains, it's hard to say. Probably alcohol. Liver problems can ruin your appearance. Weed makes you eat so it's bad for a cut but fine for bulking. Probably good for bulking actually.

If I had to choose, I would say alcohol is worse in larger doses, but if you're comparing smaller doses of each, then weed as 1 drink per day will hardly impact you negatively, while maintaining positive effects, but regular small dose weed use can still lead to problems

I know drinkers of all types. At both ends, from barely drinks at all, to flat out alcoholic, I know some people who are losers, and some who are smart, motivated, and successful (although being an alcoholic is obviously a negative)

I also know pot smokers, all pot smokers on the higher end of use (basically daily use and beyond in my experience) are unmotivated and obviously achieving below their potential in life

massive weed addict here, i have trained hard every day with good results while also being stoned all day every day, blaming lack of motivation on weed is nothing but an excuse

I smoke weed every time before I hit the gym. When I started smoking, I weighed 240, and now I'm 165 a year later. Might be better for losing weight, but I have no clue why you'd drink if you're trying to get in shape. Beer is just empty calories.

if you can discipline yourself to workout while high, it can help with the mind-muscle connection which is one of the main things that you need to build size and also with the pain tolerance (easier to push yourself to failure) and if you are the hardgainer type, it can help you eat more to bulk up so it's not totally useless.
However, it has very insidious downsides, especially over prolonged periods of use. It affects your mind and when you are high, it appears to "give", I mean, you feel these profound sensations and sometimes get thoughts that you may judge to be deep and sublime, it elevates your mood in general and drives away your boredom. But in actuality it is a trap because it "takes" as much as it gives, sometimes more but you don't perceive it as clearly. It absolutely affects and weakens your Will, not just the willpower but your agency in general. It strengthens your vices. It fricks with your mind and memory, it changes your personality, etc.
This is the reason why it's truly not worth it to use it recreationally (even if you use it every once in a while, it really is a slippery slope and it's easy to start doing it more and more often until you find that you are smoking every day and not being high feels weird now). If used as medicine it's different

          agreed.

Iirc it was something like <4 hours after your workout. Taking protein at the same time minimized the effect alcohol had on MPS.
If possible, work out in the morning / midday and drink at night, but either way it's not going to make a big impact unless you're getting hammered daily. I was progressing just fine knocking back 3-4 pints a day.

I only have edibles and have been every night for the past 5 years. From my personal experience it gives me much deeper sleep and rest, but no lack of motivation. I only have it past 8pm or 9pm, though.
Alcohol no matter what I always feel worse, even just having a few pints at the pub then going to work the next day I feel badly rested so I end up skipping the gym on days like those.

      Anonymous

      >From my personal experience it gives me much deeper sleep and rest
weed, like alcohol and any other drug really fricks sleep up big time by making REM more difficult to experience. i dont blame you since sleep is one of those things that requires a tonne of dedication to consciously improve at but its genuinely been the best decision i have possibly ever made. you should look into sleep hygiene

      tldr is:
      >set times to wake up and sleep- you will never deviate from this ever again unless absolutely necessary
      >dark room
      >quiet room
      >some form of nightly routine (i usually brush my teeth, meditate for 15 mins then set my alarm, once thats done i refuse to touch my phone no matter what until my wakeup time)
      >dont go on your phone no matter what, your one job at this time selected by you is to try and sleep, nothing else is allowed (no reading either)
      >never nap during the day

its really that simple but its torture following it faithfully, if you cant sleep, it literally doesn't matter you sit there eyes closed till morning. You have to train yourself, follow the above and you will in a months time live a better life then you did for however long you've lived

I ended up having a bit of an edible each night years ago for precisely that reason-incapable of falling asleep.
I used to try follow a fairly strict routine like you mentioned though I'd read for 30 mins in bed before sleep. Gave up eventually and resorted to edibles. However putting it in the perspective of "having to train yourself" is an interesting take as I'd usually lie there eyes shut but no sleep for a week at a time. I'll give it a shot.
I do also take magnesium tablets now an hour before sleep and it gives me the craziest dreams right before I wake up even if stoned the night before.

I don't smoke weed before going to the gym because it gives me social anxiety but I have noticed it gives me crazy good mind muscle connection, so could actually help in some cases. Weed is fine until you let it get in the way of your goals. Lethargy is a prevalent side effect for some strains, so avoid those. Smoking a J after youve done your workout, cooking, work, and other necessary activities is fine. Just don’t cave into the munchies.

Alcohol on the other hand throws off your water saturation, is very caloric, is processed and turned into carbohydrates in some cases, and hangovers make working out super difficult since you have the same amount of lethargy as with weed. Plus getting drunk disrupts your sleep. Not to mention that it’s toxic to literally all your organs.

My advice is to do both or either in moderation.
