I've been having these Final Destination-esque intrusive thoughts of my dumbbells breaking while doing skull crushers and the bottom half of it falls and smashes my face and crushes head then I looked at my dumbbell and there's some rust of the welds. I've lifted for a long time without worrying but now I can't stop thinking about it. They're used dumbbells so I have no idea how old they are. It doesn't look too bad but how worried should I be? How common is it for cast iron dumbbells to fail? Will I have warning like will it fail a little and wiggle or Will or fail all at once and permanently disfigure me?

Frick man that doesn't make me feel better. I don't drop the weights, but it freaks me out that it could break like that. I wish I could go back to never thinking about it :/

I use an EZ bar for skull crushers.

do skull crushers with an EZ bar instead of a dumbbell.

always comes loose just from putting the dumbbell on the ground

Don't overload it and you'll have more than enough time to realize it's unscrewing itself over successive sets.

not even concerned about the safety issue. its just fricking annoying that they constantly loosen themselves and need to be retightened pretty much every time you put them down.

You're not tightening them enough if they unscrew themselves. After tightening the screw, it helps to grab the weights (not the screw) and twist them in the direction that would tighten the screw. The screws should have a rubber ring that comes in contact with the weights. By twisting the weights you can apply much more torque and the screw will twist due to friction from the rubber ring touching the metal plates. There's no way they're going to magically unscrew after this.

Maybe just don’t do stupid stuff that has a high mortality chance if one little thing goes wrong. Nobody who’s doing pull-ups and sprinting have to worry about having their head crushed becuase one little problem happened with equipment.

Aren't they screwed together, at a smaller diameter?
    That's just paint flaking off.

I have no idea. That'd make me feel a little better at least it'd wobble before completely detaching.

No joking, this is why I only do bodyweight stuff. Too nervous about equipment failing on me since I got hurt as a kid.
    Thank god for burpees.

I have intrusive thoughts about taking a heavy dumbbell and smashing it on my gf's head while she's asleep. No idea where it's coming from and I see 0% chance of ever doing it, I have absolutely no ill feelings towards her, but my mind keeps pushing this vision into my thoughts and I can imagine her reaction/aftermath a bit too visually and start feeling bad about it. Shit's annoying, I guess it might have a special name for it in psychology.

yeah, its called your female urge to destory things that threaten and hate men. your gf hates you and if she wasnt a girl and needed a man or had a wall, she would happily stay single. but girls cant happily stay single so they end up settling and this harbours a deep resentment and hatred towards men.

i always thought those types of dumbbells were just casted as one whole chunk of metal? i have had those thoughts before but about cheap handles on the adjustable ones snapping in half.

i guess you should spend money on some high quality dumbbells if its that much of a problem

skullcrushers are moronic and pointless you can't go until failure without injuring yourself
